"Sigh..."
Owen Sterling heaved a heavy sigh and said, "Alright, one more night won’t hurt. If you can, could you bring Mr. Grant with you tomorrow? I really want to ask him when he’s finally going to leave me alone."
Chloe Reed’s brow furrowed slightly as she listened.
’She recalled Owen Sterling mentioning that things had been going badly for him lately, and he suspected Walker Grant was behind it.’
’But she knew Walker Grant. Owen was out of his life, so why would Walker waste his energy targeting him?’
’Besides, in Walker Grant’s eyes, Owen Sterling was a complete nobody.’
’So, what exactly happened to Owen?’
Chloe Reed pondered for a moment before saying, "Let’s talk about it properly when we meet tomorrow night."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Chloe Reed let out a soft sigh.
When she arrived at the hospital, she saw Autumn Linton standing at the door to the ward with a grim look on her face. Autumn’s head snapped toward her at the sound of her approach.
Autumn Linton grabbed her by the arm and dragged her straight into the stairwell.
Chloe Reed yanked her arm free. "What are you doing?"
Then she laughed mockingly. "Are you going to take a page from your adopted daughter’s book? Throw yourself down the stairs and then frame your biological daughter for it?"
"SLAP!"
The word was barely out of her mouth when a sharp slap landed across Chloe Reed’s face.
Autumn Linton trembled with rage. "I wish I’d never given birth to you!"
"If I had a choice, I wish I hadn’t been born your daughter."
This only made Autumn Linton angrier. "Chloe Reed, you are such a disappointment to me!"
"And as parents, you’ve disappointed me far more." Chloe Reed wiped away her tears. "I had a DNA test done. Unfortunately, the results confirmed that you are my mother. In that moment, I was truly and utterly disappointed."
With that, she left the stairwell.
She went to the restroom to wash her face, lingered outside for a while longer, and then asked a nurse for a surgical mask.
’She couldn’t let her grandmother see the red handprint on her cheek. Her grandma was still recovering; getting agitated wouldn’t be good for her.’
Pushing open the door to the room, she saw her grandmother resting in bed. The emotions Chloe Reed had just managed to suppress immediately began to surge again.
’How she longed to throw herself into her grandmother’s arms and just cry her heart out.’
