"You drive."
Chloe Reed opened the back door and got in.
Daniel Hayes agreed and got into the driver’s seat. "Miss Reed, where to?" he asked.
Chloe Reed pressed her temples. "Maplewood Gardens."
’I can’t go back to the hospital in this state. Grandma will definitely see that something’s wrong.’
"You got it."
The car started up again, and traffic on the road gradually began to flow normally.
’Who knows what Walker Grant did just to find me, to cut me off.’
Chloe Reed stared out the car window, her heart a hollow void. A cold wind seemed to whistle through it, leaving her numb to everything.
Back at Maplewood Gardens, she took a hot shower and sent her grandmother a message saying she wouldn’t be coming over tonight.
Her grandmother sent back a voice message, her tone kind and gentle. "Then get some good rest. My sweet girl has just been too tired lately."
Chloe Reed curled into a ball, and listening to her grandmother’s voice brought a small measure of peace to her heart.
Just then, her phone vibrated again. She opened it to see a message from Preston Vance.
Preston Vance: [Are you back?]
Preston Vance: [I saw your lights are on. Full disclosure, I’m not intentionally spying on you. My house is just right behind yours, after all.]
Chloe Reed: [Yeah, I came back tonight.]
Preston Vance: [How’s your grandmother’s recovery going?]
Chloe Reed: [She’s doing well. Thanks for asking.]
Preston Vance: [You’re being too formal. Aren’t we friends?]
Chloe Reed: [We are.]
Preston Vance: [I think I saw you at the cemetery today, but I was afraid I was mistaken, so I didn’t message you. Were you there?]
Chloe Reed: [Yes, I was. Today is the anniversary of Julian Grant’s death.]
Preston Vance: [I’ve heard of him. He was brilliant. Such a shame.]
Preston Vance: [You seem to really dislike Mr. Grant, but you have a good opinion of Julian Grant.]
Preston Vance: [Wasn’t he your adoptive sister’s husband?]
