’The person with the knife and the person who pushed me, were they working together?’
’The bar’s power suddenly went out. Who did that?’
’Could it be that this was all aimed at me?’
’Whose path have I blocked?’
’Why are they trying so hard to kill me?’
Chloe Reed leaned against the wall, utterly dejected. The hand tightly gripping the mop handle went slack.
In the darkness, the man across from her seemed to let out a soft scoff.
The sound was even more familiar. She lifted her gaze to look at him, pressing her lips together but not asking anything.
’It’s not safe right now.’
’And who is this person in front of me?’
The phone in her pocket was vibrating. She wanted to take it out, but the man suddenly grabbed her hand, stopping her.
Her whole body tensed up instantly, and she immediately started to struggle.
But the man was very strong. He held her hand, turned it over, and wrote on her palm: Don’t move.
Chloe Reed froze. Her fingers curled slightly, and she pulled her hand back. Though it felt very strange, she obediently stayed still.
’For now, it seems this man won’t harm me.’
Time ticked by, second by second. The space was so quiet she could clearly hear her own heartbeat, and she found the presence of the man across from her growing more and more familiar.
She thought of Walker Grant.
’But how could that be possible?’
When she contacted him yesterday, he had said he wouldn’t be back for another seven days.
’So, the man in front of me probably isn’t him.’
Chloe Reed’s brow furrowed slightly; her mind was a mess.
