After a brief silence, Preston Vance’s eyes slowly darkened.
He thought about what Chloe Reed had gone through. ’Could it be,’ he suddenly wondered, ’that someone used my name to hurt her? Is that why she’s so resistant to me?’
The moment he considered this possibility, Preston Vance’s expression turned grim.
’If that’s really what happened, then whoever did it has some serious nerve!’
Preston Vance immediately made a call, issuing several orders for his subordinates to investigate the matter and report back with their findings as soon as possible.
...
Chloe Reed had never imagined that Preston Vance would suddenly contact her.
After hanging up, she felt a sense of relief and didn’t give the matter much more thought.
However, when Annie York returned, she told Chloe that she had met Preston Vance and they’d had a long talk about what was going on between him and her.
Hearing this, a frown creased Chloe Reed’s lovely brow.
’No wonder Preston Vance contacted me. He must have run into Annie.’
She looked at Annie York, her tone turning serious. "You should keep your distance from him from now on."
Annie York blinked, confused. "Why?"
Chloe Reed said, "He’s not as benevolent as he seems. We’re just ordinary people. If he were to do something, you wouldn’t have anyone to turn to for help. So, just listen to me."
Annie York looked conflicted. She remembered that Preston Vance had sent people to rescue her before, but her loyalty was with Chloe. After a moment’s hesitation, she nodded. "Okay, Chloe. I’ll listen to you."
A smile touched Chloe Reed’s lips. She then asked, "How are you back so soon? Why didn’t you stay at home for the night?"
Annie York said, "My mom has a caregiver looking after her, so I wasn’t really needed at home. I thought I should come back. Besides, this way I can keep Grandma company and make her a little happier."
