In a jungle this dark, Daniel Hayes had somehow managed to hit his target from such a great distance.
Chloe Reed’s eyes widened in disbelief!
She held her breath, suppressing her turbulent feelings.
Daniel Hayes fired two more shots, but this time their pursuers were ready; no grunts of pain followed.
"Move."
he said in a low voice, quickly taking the lead to clear a path.
Chloe Reed didn’t dare hesitate, scrambling to keep up.
It was dark all around. With their pursuers still somewhere far behind them, she felt as if she could no longer even hear the chirping of insects. She had no time to worry about branches scratching her skin; all she could do was forge ahead.
The jungle was vast, a tangle of interlocking branches that made it impossible to get one’s bearings.
Daniel Hayes led her deeper into the jungle, the sound of labored breathing ringing in her ears.
After what felt like an eternity of walking, Daniel Hayes finally stopped. He scanned their surroundings and said softly, "Let’s take a short rest here. I’ll go set up a few simple traps."
Chloe Reed nodded. "Okay."
She took out her water bottle for a sip, trying to steady her ragged breaths and racing heart. But soon, she felt as if a pair of eyes had locked onto her.
In the dark and silent jungle, the sensation of being watched was especially intense!
Chloe Reed’s head snapped around to scan her surroundings, her heart leaping into her throat!
’Someone’s caught up!’
’They’ve found me!’
She tightened her grip on her pistol, her forehead breaking out in a nervous sweat.
About ten seconds later, the feeling of being watched suddenly vanished.
But Chloe Reed didn’t dare let her guard down.
