Chapter 339 New Year’s Eve
Olyan almost could not breathe.
Even Isolde, far less sensitive to these things, realized Caclan was in serious trouble.
He truly feared Orioit would refuse to come to the front.
Because he did not believe the First Legion could hold it.
The lion had been lying in the capital star zone for too many years. Its real combat power might not be much better than the Seventh Legion’s.
Putting life and death aside was one thing.
Strength was another.
You could not cross that gap by risking everything alone.
Fortunately, Olyan did not manage to kick Caelan in the end.
Because bad news from the front arrived one piece after another.
At the Kassad forward outpost, endless insectoids swallowed the position. Every soldier detonated their own spirit form in succession.
The fireworks were brilliant.
They did not stop the swarm for even a moment.
On Talan…
Beta guards drove mechanical fortresses forward without fear of death.
The final result was simple.
Every person inside those fortresses died in battle.
No one fled.
Aboard the First Legion mothership Heracles, the central AI Simba sounded again and again.
“Warning. Mogri has fallen. The swarm is expected to reach the battle line in two hours. Warning. The Viracocha Guard has detonated the planet. All life signs have vanished. Warning. All forward outposts have lost contact. Insectoids are expected to descend in thirty minutes.”
Each mechanical alert brought tears to the eyes of every soldier.
Because behind every broken line were countless comrades who had fought with everything they had.
Finally…
the insectoid tide covering the sky broke through layer after layer of defense and descended in full force.

Chapter 339 New Year’s Eve
Humanity’s fear, grief, refusal, and hatred hardened into one thing.
Resolve.
They swore to fight the insectoids to the death.
March 19, 2285.
11:59 p.m.
The outer star zone defense officially began.
The irony was almost unbearable.
Today was the Empire’s New Year’s Eve.
One minute later…
the bloodiest, darkest, most brutal new year in human history would arrive.
While the insectoid tide, led by the Giant-Jawed Stag Beetle and Infernal Prison Bee, slammed wildly into the outer star zone defense line, a flagship named Ranger was rushing back toward human territory at maximum speed.
Inside Ranger’s command room…
the old generals led by Atlas Ashford stood in stunned silence, staring at Fourfold Forward Base, now reduced to ruins.
Fury swept through them like a gale.
The Central Defense Line had broken.
Communications along the way were blocked.
Every hyperjump star gate had been destroyed.
The old generals, who did not yet know the full situation, did not panic. Instead, they began searching carefully through the limited area they could reach.
At last, on a barren frontline planet called Ragnar, they found nearly a division of surviving Seventh Legion
remnants.
Working together, they also salvaged quite a few ships from space and formed a support force that could at least be called presentable.
Proud too.
“The pass may be iron-hard, but we begin again from the start. We have believed in ourselves our whole lives. Now it is time to believe in them.”
Harper Sloane.
General Marston.
Orion Ashford.
It is time for you to open the board and fight to the death for humanity’s survival.

At the same time, on the Southeastern and Southwestern fronts…
Harper and Marston, both holding their lines while completely cut off from the outside world, had nearly reached the same decision.
Fight.
Ignore the consequences.
Set life and death aside.
Even if they fought down to the last soldier, they could not let the insectoids advance one more step.
They had commanded battlefields for years.
They were not fools.
They had already prepared for the possibility that the Central Defense Line had broken, or even that the other two lines besides their own had fallen at the same time.
Of course…
their current judgment was still conservative.
Because the insectoids had not struck them from front and rear at the same time, at most one of the three major lines should have fallen.
