Chapter 424 The Resort Worlds Fall

The mutations came too quickly.

They also erupted in far too many places at once.

The disaster was no longer limited to one shopping street. In the same moment, all of Hanada Star plunged into chaos.

The cherry-blossom resort known throughout the Empire became a living hell.

People surged toward hovercar lots in a frenzy. The instant they found a vehicle, they drove at maximum speed toward the starship ports.

They had to escape.

Now.

Immediately.

In the crush of bodies, someone slammed into Dr. Serena Rhodes and nearly knocked her off balance. Her little snow leopard leaped from her arms, expanded to full size, and snarled at everyone pressing too close.

Everything had changed too fast.

Far too fast.

Julian had been right.

Heading for the parking zones or spaceports now meant running straight into the center of a nest.

The Omegas might possess priority passage under normal circumstances, but order was already collapsing and countless people believed they were about to die. Who would honor privilege at a moment like this?

A star police officer was attempting to control the crowd when his body began to mutate.

Julian finally placed the wolf cub on the ground.

“Kill them.”

The Omegas stared at him.

Before their hesitation passed, baby Dragonlord, the miniature bear, and the lightning lion had already jumped down. The three spirit forms identified their targets at speeds ordinary people could not follow.

The Omegas were healers. Direct combat was not their strength, and they had always served on the front line from behind the fighters.

Their instinct was to withdraw.

Until that moment, none of them had considered that they could fight too.

“He’s right. Why are we running? We have this many spirit forms, and we’re soldiers too!”

Anya nodded sharply.

The declaration sent fresh energy through the entire group.

While the Omegas entered the battle, Alphas and Betas across Hanada Star also began resisting. They opened escape corridors through the streets and fought to protect the civilians moving toward vehicle lots and starship ports.

No one expected the ports to fall before more than a fraction of the population could board.

Hanada Central Spaceport was the first to disappear beneath a growing insectoid swarm.

Harborlight, Snowpeak, and Eastgate Spaceports soon followed.

Insectoids ripped their way out of one human body after another. The creatures gathered into swarms of every size, devouring anyone they reached while destroying hovercars and starships to seal every route off the planet.

Even ships that had already launched were not safe. If another host transformed inside a cabin, the vessel lost control and plunged from open space.

A ship fortunate enough to contain no parasite carriers could still be torn apart by flying locusts and other airborne insectoids.

“The bugs… They seem smarter now…”

A retired soldier made the observation moments before his starship crashed.

The insectoids had become intelligent.

What did that mean for humanity?

Did humanity still possess a future?

Far away in the outer war zone, the military communications center went from quiet to overwhelmed within minutes. Calls from planetary police and defense forces struck every operator’s console without

pause.

“This is Aurelian Star Police Fieadquarters. Our planet is under insectoid attack. We have suspected contamination and widespread parasitism. Requesting immediate military support!”

“Emergency transmission from the Upland Star Defense Force. Countless parasite carriers are transforming across the planet. The outbreak has reached mass scale…”

“Dreamweave Star calling the military. Dreamweave Star calling the military… We have fallen. Dreamweave Star has fallen…”

The communications division did not need to summon the commanders.

Orion, Atlas, and the senior generals had already entered the conference room to investigate the attacks, analyze the pattern, and organize the military response.

Hanada Star at least had Julian and the other Omegas.

The remaining worlds were in far worse condition.

“Hanada Star, Dreamweave Star, Tidelost Star, Longnight Star, Earthmother Star…”

Atlas gave a cold laugh.

“Every one is a famous resort world. The Battle of Daybreak encouraged everyone who stayed home over the year-end holidays to take a trip. These two days are the busiest of the entire season.”

“The footage Julian sent confirms Dr. Thorne’s theory.”

Orion inhaled slowly. Cold seemed to rise through his body from the floor.

“The traitors and insectoids have probably produced a superior generation of eggs. These parasites hide more effectively, develop far faster, and hatch into insectoids that already show measurable intelligence.”

Every point made the commanders’ expressions grow darker.

Humanity had fought the insectoids for more than two hundred years.

How many people had died?
