Chapter 426 The Five Believers
Dr. Thorne had no intention of killing himself over what he had done.
Death was the most cowardly form of atonement.

His answer would be research: rigorous, exhaustive work that overlooked no clue, using everything he knew to unravel Yuzuki Blackwell’s plan.
“These insectoid eggs tolerate extreme heat and remain highly active. Some victims swallowed them directly in drinking water, others consumed them in contaminated food, and a smaller number were infected through open wounds.”
Thanks to Julian, the team quickly determined every known route by which the eggs had entered people on Hanada Star.
The good news was that the eggs could survive in water for long periods but could not travel through the air.
The bad news was that heat did not kill them. Once a water supply was contaminated, boiling the water or using it in cooked food still left intact eggs behind.
Ordinary people did not possess Julian’s sight. They could not see the eggs in the water at all.
“They’re unbelievably small…”
Dr. R magnified the sample under a high-powered microscope before the movement of the larva inside finally became visible.
If the public could not see the threat, White Tower needed to create an insectoid-egg detector as quickly as possible.
“Hey, being tiny doesn’t mean we stop testing for it. Tiny still needs a detector! We’re short on time and buried in work here.”
Master Tyrell Adrian, Master Byron Frost, and the other specialists exchanged looks.
The research could not stop.
Absolutely not.
After reuniting with Julian, Orion took him directly to Hanada Star Police Headquarters.
An interstellar civilization should have been covered in surveillance. Yet as society advanced, universal education improved, and citizens became increasingly protective of their personal rights.
Serious violent crime had also declined. At the same time, investigators gained better methods for recovering terminal data, operating lie detectors, extracting memories, and solving major cases.
As a result, surveillance no longer seemed essential.
On most planets, the systems sat inactive. Elsewhere, cameras covered only major roads and ignored

Hanada Star was no different.

“We found no suspicious people in any clearly visible location. We suspect the eggs were released somewhere concealed…”
The police chief knew he had offered Orion almost nothing, but he could only force himself to report it.
Before this disaster, who would have imagined that supposedly simple-minded insectoids could devise something so underhanded?
The planet’s water quality was monitored and sterilized by automated systems. None of those systems had been capable of destroying the eggs.
“It’s all right. Pull up the recordings you do have and run them again.”
Orion placed no pressure on the chief. He knew the other resort worlds would probably give him almost the same answer.
“Yes, General.”
The chief nodded with such gratitude that he nearly cried. He did not even dare summon an assistant and hurried off to retrieve the files himself.
Julian looked at Orion.
“Do you need my help?”
“No.”
Orion rubbed Julian’s hair, led him to a couch, and produced a collection of his favorite snacks: cookies, muffins, and even small fruit cakes.
None of those foods had existed in the cultivation world. Julian considered them interstellar specialties and liked them quite a bit.
His eyes narrowed happily. He settled in and began eating with a perfectly clear conscience.
While Julian enjoyed his snacks, several Beta, officers searched through tens of thousands of surveillance clips and identified multiple tourists whose behavior stood out.
The subsequent investigation and arrests proved their judgment completely correct.
By remarkable coincidence, the officers found exactly five people.
Not one had mutated. Not one had been injured. Among all the tourists on Hanada Star, those five had remained the calmest.
They did not even care that they had been arrested.
Their terminal data had been erased beyond recovery. Every one of them lived alone, possessed unusually simple social connections, and had received several unexplained deposits.

The military could not trace the source because every payment had been made in cash.
“They took the cash to banks and deposited it themselves. None of them will reveal who paid them. They just keep muttering religious doctrine like they’re possessed.”
Aboard the starship leaving Hanada Star, Helen held his little lion and looked thoroughly exasperated.
“That’s only because Hanada Star stabilized so quickly. These people didn’t have time to react. The believers on the planets hit later all killed themselves.”
