Chapter 428 No Room to Move

Rowan never looked directly at the nun. He remained absorbed in his work from beginning to end.
The nun behaved like any other member of the elite and spared no attention for a street cleaner.
Only when she entered her vehicle did her blood-red lips curve. The smile appeared gentle and sacred, yet something about it was profoundly wrong.
So they finally found me?
Wonderful.
“Is that really her?”
Inside the conference room, the recording of the nun was projected at full size in the center, allowing the senior officers and Dr. Thorne’s research team to examine her together.
“Yes… but somehow, no.”
The female researcher most familiar with Yuzuki drew a slow breath. Even she could not reach
a definite conclusion.
The remaining researchers knew Yuzuki less well. They stood nearby in silence, unable to provide a useful answer.
Dr. Thorne studied the image for a long time.
“If I were her, then any version of me willing to appear so openly in front of the military would certainly not be the original body.”
Scientists might be poor at politics and indifferent to the subtleties of human behavior.
That did not make them stupid.
“A clone?” Orion asked.
“Most likely.”
Dr. Thorne nodded.
Dr. R and the other senior researchers agreed. Yuzuki had already demonstrated a willingness
to use cloned bodies in experiments. There was every reason to assume she would use one again.

The urgent question was not whether this particular Yuzuki was real.
It was what the conspirators intended to do.
Rowan had placed numerous operatives around the church Yuzuki frequented, the Holt estate, and the Blackwell estate.
Some agents had managed to enter those locations, but none could reach the inner areas.
From the outside, all three places appeared perfectly normal. They were quiet.
Almost unnaturally quiet.
“Every person who has interacted with Yuzuki, even indirectly, either refuses to leave home or follows a completely transparent routine. I think the boss was right. Yuzuki is probably responsible only for the research. Someone else is controlling the rest.”
Rowan stated the conclusion without hesitation.
It would have been easier if Yuzuki were in command.
Instead, she appeared to be doing almost nothing.
At most, the military could prove that she maintained connections with the Blackwells, Watsons, and Holts. Her older sister was also the Emperor’s mistress and was unlikely to be innocent.
They had no direct evidence.
Even though the military controlled the armed forces, it could not simply dismantle three great families and remove Emperor Alexis from the throne.
The moment it tried…
Civil war would begin.
The disaster-class swarm still existed, and the internal mutations had not been resolved. Could the military risk moving against the capital?
No.
Orion also understood that anyone willing to leave him a trail of clues must already possess a method of restraining the military.
Not by forcing it to submit.

By ensuring that it had no attention or manpower left to spare.
The proof arrived late that same night.

Harper, who was overseeing border patrols, reported that the disaster-class swarm had begun pressing toward the outer star regions. The insectoids gathered beyond the bottleneck and
waited, their intentions officially unclear.
“Unclear?” Atlas asked with a bitter smile.
There was nothing unclear about it.
The swarm was threatening the military and preventing it from transferring troops inward.
Go ahead. Leave the border.
The moment you do, the insectoids will advance.
The mecha forces Caleb Hayes led across the affected planets faced an equally severe problem.
Within days, mutations erupted on several more worlds. Even after every surveillance system was activated, the insectoid believers continued their work without fear.
The believers existed everywhere.
The military could guard against enemies outside its walls.
It could not guard against every person already inside the system.
With anyone potentially transforming into an insectoid, panic spread through every star region. Citizens flooded StarNet with demands for larger military garrisons.
The military would not station a major force on every planet.
It still had to divert personnel into regional patrols so troops could suppress new outbreaks at a
moment’s notice.
The truth was simple.
Destroying something was always easier than protecting it.
Meanwhile, mysterious serums began appearing at underground auctions across the capital world.
The sellers claimed the drugs could improve the body and raise a person’s rank.
The boldest advertisement promised that if either parent was an Alpha, the serum could
