Chapter 466 The Unwilling Prodigy

PM

45 Paris

Suzuki had not yet found an answer when Julian, who had still been watching the mermaid performance a second earlier, turned his head.

Violet flooded those amber, catlike eyes.

If someone isn’t worth trusting, why bother trusting him at all? Crush his consciousness and take complete control.

Simple.

Elsewhere, deep inside the vast underground laboratory, a woman’s delighted voice rang out.

“Oh my God. What a wonderful surprise. I told them ages ago to bring me people from the Second and Third Legions, and no one listened.”

The nun had already shed her habit and changed back into the white lab coat everyone associated with her. Her eyes shone as she stared toward the isolation room.

Several days had passed, but the 17 captured Alphas were still unconscious on their floating beds. Suppression collars remained locked around their necks, with matching restraints at their wrists.

Their bodies slept.

Their wills did not.

Even unconscious, they continued fighting the insectoid eggs trying to invade them.

“The highest fusion rate is only 30 percent so far, Teacher. They’re incredibly resistant.”

A cluster of researchers surrounded Yuzuki Blackwell, but only one young man holding a data tablet stood close enough to be at her side.

Messy dark-brown curls framed a fine-featured face. Faint blue-violet shadows lay under his eyes, and even the whites were streaked with red.

He clearly had not slept properly in a very long time. Exhaustion weakened every word he spoke.

“They are,” Yuzuki agreed. “Still, I have to admit your modified generation is much more compatible with human hosts. Even with these Alphas resisting this hard, the eggs are still eating into their psychic seas, quietly and little by little. That’s excellent.”

A pleased smile touched her lips. The approval in her gaze was unmistakable.

The young man was Evan Grant, the gifted researcher Yuzuki had specifically told her older sister to find for her. He was a newly minted biology doctoral student with a mind that could process information almost as quickly as a terininal.

Yuzuki liked him very much.

For the past two years, she had kept him near her whenever possible.

One could probably call it special cultivation.

“Thank you, Teacher…”

Evan smiled shyly.

There was not a trace of happiness in it.

Only fear.

And helplessness.

He had not chosen to be here.

That fact mattered to no one around him. Not to Yuzuki, and not to the researchers gathered around her.

Consent was irrelevant.

He only needed to be useful.

Wasn’t that enough?

“The performance upstairs is almost finished. This batch of serum is critical. Has every dose been checked?”

Professor Nakamura, who was responsible for the auction supply, spoke with a severe expression. His irritation at being outshone by Evan found a convenient target almost immediately: the researchers working under him.

“Everything’s ready. We notified the upper levels a moment ago. We’re only waiting for Mr. Blackwell to come collect it himself.”

The researcher being scolded kept his head bowed and absorbed the entire lecture. Only after Professor Nakamura finally stopped did the man dare answer in a low voice.

Serum…

Evan shook his head.

Greed really has no bottom.

He could not understand these people.

They already possessed wealth an ordinary person could not accumulate in one lifetime, two lifetimes, or even a dozen.

Servants put everything into their hands. They lived in extravagance, spent without restraint, and even without standing at the very peak of personal strength, they remained so far above normal citizens that most people could never hope to reach them.

And that’s still not enough?

Why do they have to turn themselves into monsters? Why volunteer to become feed for bugs?

Evan did not understand them.
