Chapter 474 The Thousand-Faced Lynx

Once the group lost the main building’s protection, anyone separated from the others could become centipede food. The risk was extreme.
Rowan immediately gathered everyone into one formation.
An Alpha summoned a war tiger to carry Dr. Thorne, Dr. R, and Evan. Adrian took Julian onto his back, while Harold carried Helen.
Rowan led from the front.
His spirit form looked almost indistinct.
Long, fine silver tufts rose from the tips of its ears. Their ends shifted constantly to match the colors around them. Its body was sleek, somewhere between a wolf and a cat.
“What is that supposed to be?”
Julian yawned from Adrian’s back, sounding more bored than frightened.
They were running for their lives. Julian showed no tension at all.
Helen watched him in fascination.
Is this what the presence of a true powerhouse looks like?
He tried to erase the fear from his own face and copy/Julian’s blank expression.
His mouth kept twitching.
He appeared to be maintaining his composure and failing at the same time.
Adrian heard his younger brother ask a question and immediately stared at Rowan’s spirit form.
He stared harder.
Then harder still.
What was he supposed to do if he still could not identify it?
Adrian drew a deep breath and shouted without ceremony.
“Rowan! Julian wants to know what the hell your spirit form is!”
Rowan: “…”
Truthfully, Rowan had no idea what the creature had become either.
He could only answer honestly.
“A lynx, probably. A Thousand-Faced Lynx.”

The spirit form racing ahead and beating centipedes responded at maximum volume.
“Meow!”
“Ahem!”
Rowan coughed heavily. Before Dr. Thorne could point out with a puzzled expression that lynxes did not sound like that, Rowan sternly corrected his supposed lynx.
The creature answered in wounded obedience.
“Awoo…”
There had been a whine waiting behind the sound, but Rowan forced it back down.
Julian laughed against Adrian’s shoulder.
“Mm. I still prefer wolves.”
Adrian smiled when he heard his brother laugh.
Even Rowan, running at the front, shook his head with helpless resignation.
Fine. This works too.
Dr. R alone had no time for the comedy. She kept throwing force-field braces into the narro ahead, supporting sections that might collapse at any moment.
She carried tools like these everywhere.
Most of the time, no one understood why.
Then danger arrived, and everyone understood.
The group soon reached the elevator zone and returned to the Prism Gallery on Level Five.
The ceiling slab had cracked in a spiral from the outside inward. Broken sections rotated downward along the path of an invisible vortex.
The gallery itself was empty.
Dr. R’s warning had clearly been taken seriously.
No living guests remained, but bodies lay everywhere. Some had been trampled. Others had died beneath falling debris.
The scene was miserable.
No one felt sympathy.
Neon Mirage had never been an innocent place. Apart from those deceived into entering, nearly everyone there bore responsibility for something.

The group continued upward and soon encountered more people.
Most were not guests. They were security officers, servers, cooks, and cleaners.
They knew the complex better than anyone, yet they had not left. Instead, they searched the relatively stable wreckage for valuables.
Rowan and the soldiers said nothing.
Evan shouted at them.
“This place is collapsing! Stop searching! Even if you find something, you won’t live long enough to spend it! Run!”
He convinced almost no one.
The group rushed onto Level Two. Behind them, the three dark-patterned scale-spine centipedes that Rowan’s spirit form had beaten into temporary submission finally attacked again.
They devoured the looters completely.
Not very tasty.
Still, food was food.
Level Two was even more absurd than Level Three.
The space was packed with wealthy and influential people. Their morph masks were gone, and person frantically displayed a name, family, title, or/fortune.

“Get me out, and I’ll give you more money than you can spend. No–a spaceport. I’ll give you an entire planet!”
“I never should’ve followed you into this damned market! There are insectoids here. They’re going to eat me!”
