Chapter 53 A Market That Took Lives
On the public shuttle Julian watched Helen speak on the shared screen.
First came the insectoids.
Then the soldiers at the front.
Then the legions.
Helen’s voice stayed gentle the entire time, polished enough that even grief seemed graceful.
“In short, although the general made the decision to separate from me unilaterally, I will still do everything in my power to treat him. Not only as his former fiancé, but as the empire’s top healer.”
Sadness flashed through his eyes.
He quickly lowered them, as if hiding the emotion.
“Please believe me.”
Several passengers around Julian were already moved.
“The general and Lord Helen really do love each other. Did you hear that? The general chose to end it himself. He must not want to drag Lord Helen down.”
A sentimental Beta girl’s eyes were red.
Another passenger immediately took comfort when/Helen turned toward the hovercar.
“Lord Helen hasn’t given up either. He’s going to the general’s residence right now to treat him.
An outgoing girl beside Julian even tapped his arm, eyes bright.
“You think the general and Lord Helen are perfect together top, right?”
Julian said, “No.”
The girl froze.
For two whole seconds, her expression did not move
Then her face changed, and she was clearly ready to ask why
The shuttle announcement saved Julian
He had reached his stop
The East District was also known as the Sin District, one of the few chaone residential zones left on the capital world.
Outside the East District, the city was all cold metal, clean glass and precise technology
Chapter 53 AMarket That Took Lives
At night, the East District looked different.
Neon signs flickered above narrow streets. Giant holographic ads projected swaying figures over old buildings. Pink, deep blue, and sickly green light covered the pavement.
People with mechanical arms, artificial eyes, and metal legs walked by hand in hand.
Julian followed the crowd through that bizarre glow toward the entrance of the underground black
market.
Most black markets hid behind alleys or abandoned doors.
The East District black market did not.
Everyone here knew where it was.
Anyone could enter.
No invitation.
No mask required.
No disguise required.
You could walk right in.
But this place had one rule that scared most ordinary people away.
“Entering the market means placing a bet. Once the bet is placed, your life is on the table. Are you still going in, handsome?”
The cat-faced hostess android smiled at Julian.
She wore a bright scarlet robe, beautiful in a way that looked almost haunted.
Julian did not answer.
He simply took the cat-face mask she offered.
The android did not linger. She turned at once to the next guest
Her job was only to deliver the warning.
This was a lawless zone.
Once you crossed the threshold, life and death were your own responsibility
In simpler words, you could kill inside.
Others could kill you too.
If you still chose to enter, then whoever killed you owed you nothing

Julian put on the cat-face mask and stepped with the crowd through the transparent energy curtain tha rippled like water.
Noise slammed into him first.
Then came the smell of metal, engine oil and cheap smoke.
Compared with the strange neon city above, the black market was dirtier, louder, and far more broken.
Pink-blue lights buzzed over rusted stalls.
Ɔld starship parts were piled like scrap bones.
Half-machine humans moved through the crowd, their mechanical eyes glowing in the dark.
Need a guide, handsome? Any corner of this market, I can take you there.”
Brokers threaded through the chaos, and one of them immediately locked onto Julian.
Sure.”
The broker’s face brightened.
Then Julian added, “You’ll do it for free? That’s generous.’
The broker’s smile vanished.
He turned and left without a word, muttering to the other brokers as he went.
joon, all the brokers knew Julian was broke.
The entire broker army let him pass.
Not even a dog wanted to ask him another question.
