"So, will you just die for everyone’s sake?"
Zoren’s gaze on Nathalie lowered as he let out a shallow breath. "Would I die for everyone?"
Maybe.
When Zoren woke up in this lifetime, he didn’t have a reason to live. If anything, just like Nathalie, he also believed he should simply die. That his life meant nothing, but his death might.
For the longest time, he believed in that.
Even when his brain shut out all these previous memories to keep him going, his heart and soul knew he shouldn’t be there. Hence, his health simply started deteriorating on its own.
All these years, Zoren’s biggest enemy was himself.
But...
"My life does matter," he whispered, slowly gazing up to meet Nathalie’s eyes. "Because if not, they wouldn’t come here to fight the fight I already fought and won all by myself. You and I may not value it, but some people did."
Not just Old Mrs. Pierson, who was the only person Zoren held onto in the past, but also quite a lot of people, he would lose count of if he started naming them.
"And all those people... would take a bullet for me," he said. "Just because."
"How touching." Nathalie smiled. "Then, more reason for you to make sure they won’t be sacrificing for a losing battle, isn’t it?"
Zoren didn’t answer, but after a few seconds, he rocked his head.
"The code..." he trailed off. "You said you claimed it."
Nathalie chuckled and smirked. "I didn’t."
"Aren’t you afraid that I might have?"
"You wouldn’t," she returned so calmly. "Zoren, my poor nephew, there isn’t a code anymore."
Nathalie rubbed the armrest and pushed herself up, marching toward Zoren. When she stopped near his seat, she leaned her side against the table.
"
"As for the rest of the Shadow Order... I’ll deal with all of them," she added. "Hunt them one by one, starting from those on the island and then those who have already gone into hiding. And I will not stop until every single one of them is dead."
She lowered her head, blinking almost innocently. "Shadow Order... is something I never wanted to begin with. If anything, I wanted it so I could destroy it."
Because this code they had been fighting for could have been given to her so easily. But even when she met this old fool from the Shadow Order for her to claim it, it was not given to her. Therefore, Nathalie would rather not have it.
It was why she ended Octavia, the leader of the Shadow Order, and would continue to hunt them all down for wasting years of her life.
"You are a smart man," Nathalie reached out and squeezed his shoulder once. "Make a better choice."
With that, Nathalie retrieved her hand and pushed herself away from the table. She gazed down at him briefly before she resumed her steps, heading to one of the pavilion’s exits.
"It’s been a while, that’s what he said," Zoren explained. "And when I called him by the name, he didn’t even react. And after our conversation, I realized you know nothing of the past. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have indulged with Jonathan."
