Please Come Back, My Love novel Chapter 213

Chapter 213

AMARIS POV

I knew Theron wanted me to stay holed up in my apartment, but I couldn’t do it. I’d already spent hours pacing back and forth, dragging my thoughts in circles, desperately trying to conjure some kind of solution to this mess. I even called Evadnje Monroe to fill her in on Zinnia’s latest move.

She promised to handle the media if things went sideways, and though having her in my corner brought some comfort, the restlessness clung to me like a second skin tight, irritating, impossible to shake.

By the time Romilly called and suggested lunch, I was halfway to a breakdown. I said yes without hesitation. Maybe it wasn’t the wisest decision, but I couldn’t live in lockdown just because Zinnia might be plotting her next hit.

“So… this Thayer guy, or whatever his name is. He’s trying to frame you?” Romilly asked, jabbing her fork into her salad.

I nodded. “That’s what it looks like. Either Zinnia paid him off or someone else on her payroll did. He’s claiming I was working wit Mrs. Lockhart. That I stole documents for her.”

Romilly raised an eyebrow. “Do these people not know your record’s squeaky clean? I mean, you’ve probably never even jaywalked.

I gave a dry laugh. “Unfortunately, if this reaches the media, it’ll come down to his word against mine.”

She chewed thoughtfully. “What about the photos? Were they doctored?”

“If we had high-resolution versions, maybe we’d know by now. But with the grainy copies we’ve got? Not much to work with.”

Romilly winced. “That’s rough.”

“You’re telling me.” I let out a sigh. “The one with me in it looks so convincing it makes my blood boil.”

Just then, my secure phone buzzed. The sound nearly launched me out of my seat. I answered, heart pounding. “Hello?” My voice

cracked slightly.

“I’ve got good news and bad news,” Theron said, skipping pleasantries. He told me about his meeting with Sunniva. Hope surged

through me. If she could prove the Lockhart photos were fake, maybe we could discredit the ones with me too. A smile pulled at n

lips but it faded as soon as he gave me the rest of the update.

“I’m flying to Hong Kong tomorrow. With Zinnia.”

His words were clipped, the fury in them barely veiled.

“Well… at least you’ll get to see the company. Maybe you’ll find something on Chun Kit,” I said, trying to sound hopeful. But the thought of him leaving especially with her twisted my stomach into knots, My voice trembled. “Do you know how long you’ll be

gone?”

A pause.

“A week… maybe two. I’ll call wheneve; I can. I’ve already spoken to Lazaro he’ll boost your security while I’m away. I’ll make sure

you’re safe.”

Two weeks. But what if they kept him there longer?

No. I couldn’t let my mind go there. If I did…

I swallowed the lump rising in my throat.

“Come back to me soon.” My voice was barely above a whisper.

“I will,” he said.

The line went dead. I lowered the phone onto the table and turned to Romilly, blinking fast.

“Sorry about that,” I murmured.

She studied my face. “You okay?”

I shook my head. “No. He’s going to Hong Kong. With Zinnia.”

Romilly grimaced. “Shit.” Then she softened. “Well, maybe it’s a chance for him to dig up something on Chun Kit.”

I forced a smile. “That’s the hope.”

“Still… I kind of wish you were going too.”

I shook my head. “Impossible. Zinnia would never let it happen”

“I’m not saying go as a third wheel or anything,” she interrupted, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “But what if you flew out on you

own? Maybe to find Wong?”

I gave her a look. “I’d have to go off the grid. Fake ID, cash only. And even then, Chun Kit would probably sniff me out within

hours.”

She chuckled. “Ami the Spy.”

“Forget it,” I muttered, rolling my eyes. “We need to focus on what we can control. Sunniva’s confident the photos of Lockhart are fake. If I can prove that, maybe I can defuse Zinnia’s latest bomb before she sets it off.”

Romilly shrugged. “Have it your way. Still think you’d make a killer spy.”

I flashed her a sarcastic grin. “Sure. I’d blend right in blonde and blue-eyed in the middle of Hong Kong.”

She snorted. “You could always wear a wig and colored contacts.”

groaned. “Just eat your lunch.”

She laughed louder this time but thankfully dropped the subject until we parted ways.

“I’ve got to get back to the office,” she said, pushing back her chair.

“You?”

“Mrs. Monroe wants to meet a few blocks away.” I gestured toward the skyline. Still surreal that one of those towers belonged to Evadne.

Romilly looked around. “Where’s your driver?”

“Picking me up later. Told him I’d walk for a bit. I needed air after being caged up in that apartment.”

She nodded. “Makes sense. See you soon, Ami.”

I smiled faintly. “See you.”

I turned and headed down the street. The city buzzed around me, too loud, too bright. After two blocks, a shiver ran down my sp My chest tightened, and the back of my neck prickled with cold. Something felt… wrong, I didn’t know what, but my instincts screamed.

A shadow flickered in a traffic mirror as I passed another block. Was it real, or had my nerves finally cracked?

I quickened my pace.

Maybe I should’ve called Hollis. Maybe walking had been a mistake.

Another mirror. Nothing this time.

I almost let myself breathe until someone yanked my purse.

“Hey!” I shouted, watching a man in black bolt into the crowd with my bag. “Stop! Thief!”

No one moved. Of course.

Grinding my teeth, I took off after him. Thank God I wore flats. If I’d been in heels, I’d already be face down on the pavement.

“He stole my bag!” I yelled again, but my voice was lost in the chaos.
