Elena: POV

His jaw worked. “Because people who make mistakes should face consequences. And I don’t want you caught in the crossfire when it happens.

I stared at him. “What are you talking about?”

“The Cruz family. His voice was flat, businesslike. “Three years ago, they broke off Sophia’s engagement to Lucas Reynolds when his family collapsed. Left him to rot while they protected their own interests.”

“Sophia didn’t want that-

“Doesn’t matter what she wanted.” He cut me off. “She stood by while her family destroyed a man’s life. Now Lucas is back, and he’s not the forgiving type.

Anyone associated with the Cruz family might get hurt.”

“Sophia isn’t her family,” I said fiercely. “She didn’t abandon him! She went looking for him after everything happened. She tried to find him-

“So she says.” His tone made it clear he didn’t believe it.

“She did!” I could feel tears burning in my eyes now. “She spent months searching for him. Her family locked her up, monitored her every move, but she still

tried. She’s not responsible for what her parents did-”

“Elena. His hand moved to cup my face, thumb brushing my cheek. “Stop.”

“No.” I jerked away from his touch. “You don’t get to do this. You don’t get to tell me who I can be friends with-”

His mouth crashed against mine, swallowing my protest.

I tried to push him away, tried to keep arguing, but he was already pulling/me across the seat, into his lap, his hands tangling in my hair.

No, I thought desperately. Not again. Don’t let him do this again.

But my traitorous body was already responding, my hands fisting in his shirt, my lips parting under his.

His kiss was brutal–possessive, demanding, meant to claim and silence. His tongue swept into my mouth, his teeth catching my lower lip, and I heard

myself moan despite everything.

When he finally pulled back, we were both breathing hard.

“I have to save her,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “Julian, please. Lucas looked so angry. What if he hurts her-

“You can’t save her. His forehead pressed against mine, his breath warm against my lips. “There’s nothing you can do, Elena.”

“But-”

“But,” he continued, his voice dropping lower, “if you beg me nicely… I might ask my friend to go easy on her.”

I hated myself for what i was about to do. Hated the desperation in my voice. Hated that he had this power over me.

Chapter 31

“Please, whispered. Please ask him to be gentle with her, She doesn’t deserve-

“Shh.” His lips brushed my ear, sending unwanted shivers down my spine. “I’ll talk to him. But you need to be good for me. Understand?”

His hands were already moving, sliding under my coat, finding the zipper of my dress.

I should stop him. Should push him away. Should maintain some shred of dignity.

But Sophia’s face flashed in my mind–terrified, being dragged away by a man who looked like he wanted blood.

So I let him.

As Julian’s hands roamed lower, the car hummed steadily along the road. Without a word, his assistant in the driver’s seat reached up and activated the

privacy partition, the dark panel sliding up silently to separate us from the front.

The quiet whit of the mechanism was the only acknowledgment, sealing us in our own world of heated breaths and forbidden touches.
