Chapter 70

He walked away, leaving us alone in the curridor.

Victoria pulled out her phone again, typing with one hand while the other played with the diamond pendant at her throat.

“Who are you texting?” I asked, though I already knew.

“Julian.” She didn’t look up. “Giving him updates. Making sure he knows exactly what happened.”

“You mean lying to him.”

“I mean telling him the truth.” She finished typing and looked at me. “That his mother had a heart attack after you screamed at her in public. That I had to call the ambulance. That I’ve been here, taking care of everything while you…” She gestured vaguely. “Well. While you stand there looking guilty.”

‘I saved her fucking life.*

“Did you?” Victoria’s smile was poison. “Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you almost kilted her. And now you’re trying to play the hero.'”

My hands shook with rage. “When the truth comes out-”

“What

truth?” She laughed softly. “The truth is what people believe. And people will believe that Julian’s mother collapsed after fighting with his nobody wife. That the stress of having to deal with you, day after day, finally broke her.”

She stepped closer, her voice dropping.

“They’ll believe that I saved her. That I called for help, stayed by her side, made sure she got to the hospital. That I’ve been the daughter-in-law she actually wanted. Her eyes glittered. “And you? You’ll be exactly what you’ve always been. The mistake Julian made. The dirty little secret that almost destroyed his

family.”

I wanted to hit her. God, I wanted to hit her so badly my hands ached.

But I couldn’t. Because that would only prove her right.

So I turned away, walking to the plastic chairs lining the corridor. Sat down. Folded my hands in my lap.

“I’m staying,” I said again.

Victoria watched me for a moment. Then she shrugged and moved to the other end of the corridor, phone pressed to her ear,

I sat there, staring at the closed door to Evelyn’s room.

She’s alive. That’s what matters.

Julian would come. He’d be angry. He’d believe Victoria, because he always believed Victoria.

But I’d done the right thing. I’d saved his mother’s life.

Even if no one ever knew it.

An hour passed. Then two.

Chapter 70-

Victoria slayed on her phone the entire time-texting, calling, whispering urgently into the receiver. Sometimes she’d glance at me, her expression

triumphant.

*Elena.”

I looked up. Julian stood at the end of the corridor, his face pale, his hair disheveled like he’d been running his hands through it.

Victoria rushed to him immediately. “Julian, thank god-”

He barely glanced at her. His eyes locked on me.

“Elena.” He said my name again, his voice rough. “What the fuck happened?”

I stood slowly, my legs unsteady. “Your mother had a heart attack-

“I know that.” He strode toward me, his expression thunderous. “Victoria told me everything. How you were screaming at her. How you upset her so much

she collapsed.”

My stomach dropped. “That’s not-”
