Jack leans over and kisses me. Not the careful declaration of intention he usually employs when he kisses me. His hand comes up to my jaw and he kisses me the way someone kisses when they’re starving for it and are done waiting. I let him. And I kiss him back just as hungrily.
We’re both panting when we break apart and he leans his forehead against mine while we catch our breath. Then, as if deciding he needs my lips more than he needs air, he kisses me again, slow and savoring this time. Eventually, the need to breathe wins out and he pulls away with a groan.
“You have no idea what you do to me.” He murmurs, his warm breath on my face sending a shiver of want through me.
“I think you’re going to have to show me.” My words have the intended effect, lighting a fire under him.
He growls low in his chest then sweeps me into his lap so he can lift out of the truck on his side, like he can’t bear to be parted from me long enough to let me exit through my own door. He sets me on my feet and takes my hand, lacing our fingers together and pulling me close. We walk toward the Alpha house hand in hand, stopping to steal kisses every few feet. And the way he rumbles his approval with every taste has me feeling giddy.
We’re almost at the door, in our own little bubble, oblivious to our surroundings, when I smell it-his scent. The scent of my mate. Noah.
He’s on the far end of the porch opposite the door, hidden in the shadows. But my eyes find him easily, standing there with a glass in his hand-something dark, held loosely at his side like he forgot he was holding it. His eyes trail over me greedily when I step into view and for a moment, I swear I can see desire there. Then his eyes find Jack, the place where our hands are joined, and what may have been lust becomes a
sneer.
And in that moment, I know with utter certainty that he knows. He knows where I was. He knows where I’m going. He knows all of it. And if I didn’t know better, I’d almost believe he doesn’t like it. But I do know better. It’s just me he doesn’t like.
“Good evening?” he asks, no attempt to mask the disdain in his tone.
“Yes,” I say defiantly, then tug Jack forward. “Good night, Noah.”
We’re almost to the door when Noah calls me back, “Cassandra, a word.”
It’s not a request. My place here, Liam’s safe place, is in his hands and he knows I won’t refuse him. With a deep, steadying breath, I squeeze Jack’s hand in a silent plea to wait and walk back to where Noah stands.
“What is it, Noah,” I hiss, low enough only he can hear.
He ignores the venom in my voice, leaning in close to whisper in my ear, “How are you going to manage it?”
This close, he smells delicious, like soap and that mouthwatering combination that calls to my soul. His hair is wet and slightly mussed, confirming my suspicion that he’s freshly showered. The sight of him so undone combined with his scent makes me weak in the knees.

“M-, manage what?” I hate the way my voice shakes as his warm breath on my sensitive skin sends a shudder through me
“Keeping me out of your head and my name off your lips when he’s touching you.” His voice is low, husky but his tone is taunting.
“I don’t-, I won’t-” I stammer, an incomplete and very unconvincing argument.
“Yes, you will.” He chuckles, a deep, dark sound. I dare you to try not to.”
Asshole. He’s purposely trying to get under my skin and he knows it’s working. It’s really pissing me off, not just that he can do this to me but that I can’t seem to hide my reactions from him. My head is telling me I hate it but my body won’t accept the lie.
I take an angry step back but he grabs my wrist, tugging me until we’re chest to chest. My nipples are painfully hard where they scrape against his muscular pecs, drawing a moan to my lips that I barely manage to stifle. His nostrils flare, catching the way my own scent thickens the air around us.
Noah leans in and my breath catches in my throat, thinking for one breath minute he’s going to kiss me, give into this intoxicating connection we share. But he stops just short of my lips, his words a sweet breath across my lips.
“Good luck tonight…Cassie.” He smirks when I shiver at the nickname.
I jerk out of his grasp, managing to pull away and walk back to where Jack waits patiently for me, pretending to look at his phone. We go inside and I don’t look back.
But there’s no denying part of me is still back there on that porch with Noah’s breath on my skin.
