Chapter 533
Damien’s POV
When we returned to the border to meet with Richard and his group, Benedict declared, “I accept your challenge on the condition that my successor will fight on my behalf.”
“Your… successor?” Richard asked.
All eyes fell onto me.
“Yes. I’ve named Alpha Damien as my heir. I assume these new terms are acceptable,” Benedict said. “Or were you only hoping to fight against an old man, and not an Alpha in his prime.”
Richard snarled. “I can take on anyone. I expected to find a coward’s way out, Benedict. Hiding behind Damien? Pathetic. But this changes nothing. Yes, I’ll fight Damien, and I’ll win.”
“Then ready yourself for combat,” Benedict said. “We will see if you are all bluster.”
Our groups separated again, returning to each of our main forces. While Benedict filled in our commanders about what was happening, so they could spread word to the rest of the troops, I turned to Amelia.
She was already staring at me.
“I know you can take him,” she said. “You are the strongest Alpha that I’ve ever met. But I still worry.” She paused a moment. “I think I understand how you felt now, when you wanted to keep me from the battlefield.”
I grabbed her wrist and tugged her gently toward me. She came to me at once and I folded her into my arms. She wrapped her arms around me too, pressing her palms against my back.
“You must win,” she said. “I won’t settle for anything less.’
I kissed the top of her head. “I will,” I promised her. “With you cheering for me, how could I lose?”
I had detected Richard’s abilities already, so I knew I was in for a hell of a fight. The fight of my life, most likely.
But it was one that I had to win. There was no room for failure here. To lose, would mean more than just my life. The entire kingdom would crumble.
I had dedicated my life to building a safe place for my pack to thrive, and for my children to know peace and happiness. Now that I had two beautiful girls and my mate at my side, I was even more dedicated and determined.
For them, for my entire pack – no, for all of the packs in all of the kingdom – I would fight and I would win.
I had no idea the kind of kingdom Richard was hoping to build, but I would not allow his lawlessness to reign.
“Return to me,” Amelia whispered.
‘Always,” I vowed.
She lifted her head and we kissed softly. Though the kiss wasn’t deep, it lingered, each of us stubbornly refusing to part.
Too soon, Benedict cleared his throat behind me. “Damien. It’s time.”
Nodding, I pulled back from my beloved. Before releasing her hands, I brought them to my lips and kissed one and the other.
Then, unfortunately, I had to let her go.
Turning away from her and her comfort, I faced my enemy. Benedict patted me on the shoulder as I passed. He stayed behind, with the other warriors.
This fight I had to face on my own.
Richard was waiting for me at the border. He had removed his shirt and was stretching.
This wasn’t a tournament, and though there were rules to a challenge typically, I did not expect Richard to adhere to them. I had to be ready for anything.
“The terms of the challenge are simple,” Richard said as I approached. “No outside interference. And the fight ends only in surrender or death. I assume you agree to these terms?”
“I do,” I said, and ready myself.
“Good,” Richard said and shook out his body. He was spry on his feet. I anticipated quickness in his movements. “I look forward to hearing you beg me to spare your precious little Luna.’
