Zhang the Second subconsciously shifted his position, "Dad, have you thought about it? If Xi Zi is going to have a banquet, not to mention the friends and colleagues my brother interacts with, how many guests will you and Xiao Wu have? And then there’s Xi Zi’s colleagues, classmates, buddies, and my friends, and..."
Mr. Zhang waved his hand wearily to interrupt, "Alright, I understand what you mean. Sigh... I’ve been thinking about this issue too these past few days. Besides, I’m worried your Uncle Zhou would also come."
"Didn’t we tell Xiao Wu to try and persuade him?"
Mr. Zhang glanced at his wife, "You don’t understand, otherwise how could I agree to keep an eye on the eldest family? That’s such a short-sighted person you forgot. Didn’t she ask you a while ago how many times Brother Dashan had weddings, and how to collect the money? I guess she’s already calculating how much she can get."
Hearing his father say this, Zhang the Second felt a surge of joy.
The final say in this family is still in the hands of his father. But his father’s delayed opinion had made him restless, and he really thought that when he said he didn’t care, he meant it.
Mother Zhang hesitantly glanced at her husband, opened her mouth indecisively, and then closed it again. This is her first grandchild; can it really end like those people just by getting a certificate and handing out some wedding candies?
Mr. Zhang knew his wife’s weakness was her three sons, especially the youngest. Originally, there were some things he didn’t want to say. He’s already at a grandfather’s age; the grandson has his own parents, and interfering too much isn’t good.
When the sons were spanked and scolded by him, they wouldn’t hold a grudge, but no matter how filial a grandson is, he’s still a grandson. Seeing Xi Zi always mentioning his partner, it seems he’s very satisfied.
He highly suspected that if he suggested a simple family meal, the eldest grandson would internally resent him for meddling too much and feel that his wife is being wronged.
As the saying goes, "A wise man must play dumb, a family head must turn a deaf ear." But now even the sons themselves have their thoughts, so the situation is different, and he must play the bad guy.
"Wife, even if we don’t accept gifts, I’m worried that in the future our three sons will get labeled, especially our Xiao Wu who’s away. If this talk spreads and reaches Beijing twisted, even after clearing things up, once a reputation is ruined, what’s the use?"
Mr. Zhang observed as his wife’s expression shifted, internally heaved a sigh, "Let’s not mention the time when Zhang the Second couldn’t even dare to hold a banquet for his two children’s full-month celebration. Just look at Xiao Wu, having twins, Brother Zhou would be out of money? It wasn’t even this tense those years, yet he also didn’t hold a banquet?"
Zhang the Second quickly interjected, "Mom, my dad makes perfect sense. My brother thinks the same way; no one knows if someone might take advantage of the situation against him."
"Why doesn’t he just speak up?"
Zhang the Second bit his teeth secretly, returning with a bitter smile, "Every time you and Sister-in-law speak so happily, does he dare to? My brother is afraid of making you upset."
Mother Zhang slapped her thigh, "Am I such an unreasonable person?"
"Of course not," Zhang the Second shook his head repeatedly.
"Alright, you men figure it out amongst yourselves, just let me know when you decide. If we don’t do it, then fine, it’s not that I don’t recognize how festive it was at Yin Suo’s time."
After speaking, Mother Zhang thought and added, "Just remember, it’s fine if we don’t have a banquet, but it shouldn’t be like we’re hiding from people."
"It won’t, it won’t, in the end, it’s still up to Dad to make the decision, and you all have to discuss it and decide."
Mother Zhang listlessly shook her head, "Really, what kind of situation is this? Each of my three sons held grand banquets for their weddings, how come when it comes to the grandson it’s like this?"
Zhang the Second guiltily touched his nose, looking towards his father.
Mr. Zhang took out his pipe and tobacco pouch, stuffing tobacco while lighting it, contemplating for a long while, he finally puffed out a smoke ring, "Tonight, bring your brother over, I’ll hear out how he plans to handle this. There’s plenty of time, no rush."
