On a scorching summer day, the air felt oppressive, and the setting sun was still radiating heat. The branches of the trees lining the road hung listlessly.
Walking under the shade, the incessant chirping of cicadas was quite unsettling. Zhou Jiao glanced at the street scenery, her expression naturally turning somber.
Can the ancient capital still retain some of its charm?
"Mom, I didn’t attend class this afternoon."
As soon as he walked through the door, Ping’an whispered to her, causing Zhou Jiao to frown. Soon after, she nodded and smiled, "Has your dad returned home?"
"Not yet. My dad comes home around nightfall." Ping’an said, glancing at her face, "Grandma Chen just went to pick up the younger ones, I have something to discuss with you."
Zhou Jiao patted his head. Was it okay for such a small child to have such a serious expression? If the sky falls, their parents will handle it.
Zhou Jiao nodded seriously. The thought wasn’t wrong. But she still gave a few reminders: "Mom will be going out for a trip tomorrow."
"Where to?" Ping’an furrowed his brow like hers, "Didn’t you say there’s no need to travel recently?"
Zhou Jiao glanced at him amusingly, bent over to pour tea, and said gently, "My workplace is quite chaotic now, so when the chance to go on a business trip to Hai City came up, I applied voluntarily."
Listening to this, Ping’an burst into laughter. Could he say his mom was avoiding trouble, playing deserter?
Zhou Jiao tapped his nose, "Little rascal!"
Holding him, Zhou Jiao gently patted him, "Mom always asks you to keep things hidden, not to flaunt. When other kids show off in front of you, do you feel upset?"
Ping’an hugged her tightly, shook his head while laughing, "Not at all! Playing dumb and taking advantage is more fun. Grandpa says only in the dark can you see everyone’s true colors."
"I’ve taught the younger ones not to tell outsiders about family matters. If they get bullied, us three brothers will secretly take revenge later."
"Liu Yi is really smart; he never flaunts how many characters he knows in front of outsiders. Just yesterday, May 1st told me someone was a fool for trying to trick him."
Zhou Jiao understood her three sons’ precociousness very well.
Over time, it became clear—once they’re reminded it’s a secret, even their great-grandma Old Mrs. Cheng who dotes on them immensely can’t make them spill, let alone anyone else.
