Gu Junming looked at him in shock: "So serious!"
"It wouldn’t have been so bad, but at the time it was the child’s mother who was supposed to watch over him. However, she was always busy with dates and affairs, never had time to bother with the child, and the illness worsened. Now no amount of money can remedy it. I have done my best; the child can hardly speak now, it’s pitiful." Bai Chuan’s old tears flowed, extremely sorrowful.
He prided himself on being a hero when he was younger, having plotted against many people, yet never expected to be deceived by his only granddaughter when old, now left with this child. It’s as if they want to torment him to death!
Gu Junming sighed: "Do what you can and let fate decide. You have it hard too."
Bai Chuan sat in the chair smiling faintly: "Only today I understand that justice may be delayed but not denied; I’ve truly been punished now. I plotted against so many people back then, even against your mother and grandfather’s family. Being so despicable and shameless, punishment was deserved, hence my granddaughter’s marriage is so miserable."
"You admit it?" Gu Junming looked at him curiously: "You never owned up to it before."
"That was because I thought I could escape punishment, but now I’ve resigned myself to fate. I really must accept my punishment."
"Then, do you have any news of my mother?" Gu Junming asked, "Is she... still alive now?"
Bai Chuan was stunned: "Wasn’t she already dead? Could it be that she isn’t?"
Clearly, Bai Chuan knew nothing; he didn’t even know his father had swapped another corpse for his wife’s cremation. Talking to him about this now was useless, so Gu Junming just smiled.
"I’ve always wished for a miracle, that my mother was still alive, but it seems unlikely now."
"It’s my fault. But believe me, I never truly intended to kill anyone. I just wanted to get rid of the people above me so that I could be safe. I am cowardly and timid, but I truly wasn’t out to harm anyone!" He finished speaking and covered his face, crying. Now he was sincerely sad, feeling he had received the harshest punishment.
Gu Junming waved his hand: "Forget it, it’s all in the past, I don’t want to bring it up." Bai Chuan’s regret stems from the issues with his descendants. Had Bai Fanglan not fallen, he wouldn’t regret a thing in his life. Until his retirement, he was still plotting how to stop Gu Junming from climbing the ranks, so his remorse means little to Gu Junming.
Gu Junming then asked if there was any news of Bai Fanglan. Bai Chuan was even more surprised: "Isn’t she in the south? Why? Has she returned? I’ve never heard from her, no letters or calls! I dared not move because of her!"
Gu Junming thought to himself, Bai Fanglan really is heartless. He said a few more words to Bai Chuan and then took his leave.
"Thank you for visiting us; this old body of mine may not live much longer. Once I die, I will atone for my sins below." Bai Chuan sighed, "I never thought I would sink to such depths."
Gu Junming murmured a few words and left.
Bai Chuan returned to his room, looked at the child, and sighed helplessly.
But if she didn’t take up his offer, she would likely end up sleeping on the streets, so she went with him.
The man rented an apartment for Bai Fanglan, supporting her. Bai Fanglan was thoroughly fallen, with food and shelter without having to exert herself.
But who would have thought that before long, the director’s wife found out? The woman was fierce, made no scene, but subtly added a substance into Bai Fanglan’s water dispenser. She had no idea, but soon she started losing hair, getting spots on her face, aging terribly.
The director’s wife pointed at her face, laughed: "You’re so old now, and you still want to compete with me? Let everybody see your condition; whoever wants you is an idiot!"
Bai Fanglan rushed at her to hit her, but she had no strength left and was slapped to the ground.
The director noticed the issue too, but he dared not fight for justice for Bai Fanglan. She was merely a plaything, and now old and ugly; why would he do anything for her? He waved his hand and left without a trace, returning to his wife’s side.
Bai Fanglan cried out: "Why? How could you trick me like this? I will sue you!"
"Sue?" The director sneered: "You don’t even speak the language here, sue for what? If you have evidence, go ahead and sue. My wife’s parents have connections; if she dared do this, she already figured out the countermeasures. To be honest, you’re just a toy; Who do you think you are? I’m not bothering to get back the money I spent on you; be grateful. Now, scram, and don’t appear in this city again, or if you end up dead, you’d be bringing it upon yourself, nothing to do with us." He finished with no mercy and walked out.
