Huo Qianjin and Huo Gaodi exchanged a glance upon hearing Jiang Jingya’s words and then both nodded.
What she said was true. When they came of age, Huo Shanhe had divided their mother’s belongings between the two of them, just as he had done for their older brother and sister; their aunt’s belongings had been given only to them as well.
But today, for some reason, Duan Zhuangyu seemed to be acting out of turn. Just when it should have ended, she suddenly asked: "How can we be sure Dad didn’t hide anything left by Auntie and my mother-in-law?"
As soon as she said this, not only Jiang Jingya, but even Huo Shanhe’s face darkened: "How dare you! Is this what your parents taught you?"
Duan Zhuangyu turned pale: "Dad, I, I....."
Huo Shanhe looked directly at his third son: "Huo Gaodi, you were old enough to remember when your Auntie Jiang came into the family. You and your brother know best about your mother’s belongings, as they were sealed in front of you and later opened in your presence. Now, what is your wife saying?"
Duan Zhuangyu was unaware of these matters, and hearing her father-in-law’s words, her face turned red: "I, I, I don’t know, Dad, I."
Jiang Jingya coldly interjected: "The belongings of your aunt and your mother were given to their children. Naturally, my belongings will be left to Jiayuan and Jingrui. This is fair. As for your father’s income, it’s all in that iron box, and he will manage it himself from now on, saving me the trouble."
With that, she picked up her purchases and went upstairs.
She was truly exhausted and didn’t want to linger in pointless arguments with them.
As soon as Jiang Jingya left, Huo Shanhe asked coldly, "Are you all satisfied now?"
Huo Gaodi kept his head down: "Dad, I never had such thoughts. But today, this matter was caused by Duan Zhuangyu, and as her husband, I do have some responsibility.
Today, Auntie Jiang is understandably angry. I’ll wait until after my mother’s memorial before I take Duan Zhuangyu to buy a gift and apologize to her.
Huo Qianjin glanced at his watch: "Indeed, it’s time."
He put down his hand and shouted upstairs, "Dad, Auntie Jiang, we’re leaving to pick up Xiaoxi."
He knew they could hear him, and then he turned to Huo Gaodi, whose face was still looking troubled: "We’re leaving first."
Feeling embarrassed to stay any longer, Huo Gaodi said, "Let’s go together."
Saying this, he also shouted upstairs, "Dad, Auntie Jiang, we’re leaving too."
He heard no response from Jiang Jingya, only Huo Shanhe replied, "Be safe on the road."
