"It’s getting dark, and you gentlemen are still out patrolling the city to ensure the safety of us common folk. Such dedication! Are you off duty now and looking to have a drink?" The Shopkeeper smiled as he spoke, "Then, gentlemen, please come upstairs... I’ll arrange the finest wine and dishes for you, guaranteed to satisfy!"
The leading government officer stepped into the tavern with a somber face, his chilly gaze sweeping the room. Some patrons stared at him cluelessly, some were silent... some worried or scared, or simply tipsy and dazed. He turned his head and said, "Bring them up!"
"Yes, sir!"
Soon, a thin man with a sharp face and shifty eyes was shoved in by the officers. He hunched his back, shrank his neck, not daring to look anyone in the eye, and tremblingly pointed out those who had earlier voiced dissatisfaction with the Zhou Dynasty.
The lead officer raised his hand and shouted, "Arrest them all!"
"Hey! Hey! Sir! Sir..." The Shopkeeper’s face changed drastically as he hurried to intervene, but how could he be a match for the burly officers? He was shoved aside, and if not for the shop assistant catching him, he might have fallen to the ground.
Three or four officers pinned the drunken butcher on the square table, smashing wine cups and plates crashing onto the floor.
Seeing the officers rushing in with their swords, the tavern quickly descended into chaos. Some remained frozen at their tables, others stood up in fear, knocking over cups and pitchers.
The Shopkeeper hastily tried to stop the officers rushing in, while slipping a silver note into the lead officer’s hand: "Sir, these are all locals, just here for some drinks, getting a bit high and saying a few careless words. Please, be lenient!"
"Get lost!" The lead officer shoved the Shopkeeper away once more, causing the silver note to fall to the ground. The officer pointed sternly at the Shopkeeper, stomping on the note, saying, "Attempting to bribe an Imperial Court officer, arrest him!"
At the order of the lead officer, the Shopkeeper was also seized, his knees buckling as he fell to the ground, pleading loudly: "Spare me, sir! Spare me!"
Six or seven soldiers moved to seize the scholarly individuals who had spoken out earlier. The four scholars sharing the same table, before the officers arrived, raised their cups in a mutual nod before finishing their drinks in one gulp and stood up, saying with dignity: "No need to trouble yourselves, we’ll go willingly!"
"Take them away!"
"What are you doing! Why are you arresting me! What law have I broken!" The butcher, pinned to the table, used brute force to push away the officers, grabbed a dish and smashed it, holding the shards threateningly, "Try coming any closer!"
"Why arrest you? For your loose tongue, for defaming the Emperor here! For disrespect to the Emperor!" The lead officer saluted towards the south and pointed at the butcher, shouting, "Why are you still standing there? Arrest him!"
The officers were about to advance when the butcher, holding a shard, his hand bleeding, threatened them: "Anyone who dares, I’ll take them down with me!"
The butcher was naturally burly and fierce-looking, intimidating the officers momentarily.
Perhaps it was the wine bolstering his courage, coupled with his resentment toward the Zhou Dynasty after the death of the Prince of Hancheng, the butcher could no longer contain his rage, shouting: "What damn Emperor! Whoever can protect our coastal people is our Emperor! The Prince of Hancheng died protecting us and his body is held in the Dongyi Kingdom, with Dongyi demanding the Emperor of Zhou personally retrieve it, or they’d desecrate it. And you... you were once Daliang men, sheltered by the Prince! Yet when he’s taken by Dongyi, you aren’t concerned, but slandering the Emperor of Zhou makes you upset?! Desperate to be the Emperor’s lapdogs!"
