"You guys are busy, you just don’t have time. It’s not that you don’t care."
Kang Li looked at Big Brother Kang and the others, feeling strangely complicated. She’d only done what any child should do, just a small thing, so why did her brothers keep dragging it out and discussing it?
She shifted her gaze, looking at Captain Kang and Cai Xiufang: "Dad, Mom, say something to my big brother and the others. What are they doing, insisting on dredging up the past, making it seem like I’ve done something wrong, sitting here like I’m being roasted over a fire, hearing sizzling noises all over me, about to get cooked well-done!"
As she said this, Kang Li exaggerated her movements and expressions: "Smell that? Can you all smell the meat getting cooked?"
Big Brother Kang and the others were stunned, and then burst out laughing.
Captain Kang and Cai Xiufang also laughed at the same time. Cai Xiufang said, "I’ve said more than once, you’re the cheekiest one in our family, always clowning around. Now you admit it yourself?"
"Oh come on! How am I cheeky, how am I clowning around? Clearly, I’m just keeping things lively!"
Kang Li blinked her eyes, full of innocence.
"Our Li Bao is still so lively and adorable, that’s great!"
This was Second Brother Kang’s voice.
"Still got a child’s heart."
Kang Guoan chimed in.
"Li Bao is our little sister. Even if she’s seventy or eighty, she’ll always be a kid to us. Having a childish heart’s not a bad thing."
Big Brother Kang laughed, and Third Brother Kang and Fourth Brother Kang nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly with his words.
Kang Li’s cheeks felt a bit hot, but she kept her composure.
She cleared her throat and pretended to be calm: "I don’t know how families elsewhere get along, but I’m so lucky I grew up in our family, so lucky to have Mom, Dad, and you big brothers as my kin. In our family, I’ve always felt warmth, felt everyone’s care, learned how to get along with others, understood what family means, what real affection is."
The room went so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Kang Li’s expression softened as she looked at Captain Kang and Cai Xiufang, then at her brothers: "Even though I’m not Mom and Dad’s biological child, even though I don’t share blood ties with you big brothers, to me—"
She pointed to her chest, continuing, "Mom and Dad are my real parents. Big brother, second brother, third, fourth, fifth brother—you are all my real brothers. Everyone in our family is my family!"
