Chapter 274
Elara
“You’d do that? Every weekend?”
“Every single one.” He turned to face me fully. “I’ve already talked to the board about expanding into New England. Opening a Providence office. Tha can spend more time here without neglecting the company.”
I stared at him. ‘You’re restructuring your entire business for me?”
‘I’m restructuring my life for us.” He brushed his thumb across my knuckles. “You’re not a distraction from my real life, Elara. You are my real life.
Everything else is just details.”
My throat felt tight. “You’re really serious about this.”
‘I’m serious about you.” He paused, then added quietly, “I’ve been thinking about marriage.”
I blinked. “Marriage? Julian, we just got together like ten minutes ago.”
“I know.” He had the grace to look slightly embarrassed. “I’m not proposing right now. I’m just saying… I’ve thought about it. About what our future co
look like. And I want it. All of it. With you.”
“You’re insane,” I said, but I was smiling. “I haven’t even agreed to be your girlfriend for a full hour and you’re already planning a wedding?”
‘I’ll propose every day if I have to. Until you say yes.”
“Even if it takes ten years?”
“Even if it takes a lifetime.” He said it so simply, so certainly, that I almost believed him.
We sat in silence for a moment. The campus was starting to quiet down as the afternoon stretched toward evening. Somewhere nearby, someone was play music. A group of students walked past laughing about something.
‘Do you want kids?” I asked suddenly. The question had been sitting in my chest for weeks, maybe months. “Real ones, I mean. Not just-
“Yes.” He didn’t hesitate. “I want children with you. Our children.”
We both went quiet then, because we were both thinking the same thing. Lily. The daughter I’d lost, the daughter he’d failed to protect, the little girl who should have been here with us.
Julian.” My voice came out rough. “There’s something I need you to promise me.”
“Anything.”
“When we have kids–if we have kids–I need you to tell them about Lily.” I had to force the words ou past the tump in my throat. I need her to be part of our family. Not a secret. Not something we’re ashamed of.”
“Elara.” He took both my hands in his. When we have children. Fin going to tell them about their big sister, Lily Vane. De going to make sure they know she existed, that she mattered, that she deserved so much better than what this world gave her.”

Chapter 274
Tears were streaming down my face now. “You promise?‘
“I promise.” He pulled me close, and I buried my face in his shoulder. “She’ll never be forgotten. Not by me, not by our family, not by anyone. I swear it.”
I cried for a while–for Lily, for the life she should have had, for all the ways I’d failed her the first time around. Julian just held me, one hand stroking my hair, murmuring quiet reassurances that I was safe, that I wasn’t alone, that he had me.
When I finally pulled back, the sun was starting to set. The sky had gone pink and orange, painting the campus in warm light.
“Come on, Julian said gently. “Let’s get you settled in your room. Then I’m taking you to dinner.”
