Chapter 143 Infighting
The flood alone wouldn’t have killed that many people, but an internal riot has no ceiling on casualties Leonel let out a slow breath. “It wasn’t just one incident either. It broke out in multiple places at once, and Mr. Marsh couldn’t be everywhere. Things spiraled past the point of control fast. People were killing each other over the pods, robbing each other blind, and by the time it was over, you couldn’t tell the victims from the aggressors anymore.
“And when the floodwall finally gave out in the middle of all that chaos, nobody had time to get into a pod. They just got swept away. Once the current took you, there was no coming back from it.”
David stared. “I can’t believe it unraveled that fast.”
“That’s exactly how it goes,” Autumn said flatly. “Human nature. It never holds up when you look at it directly.”
“Honestly, Mr. Marsh spoiled those people,” Leonel said. “If he’d ruled them the way the central shelter leeches run things, this never would’ve happened. A soft hand destroys armies and bankrupts fortunes. Never been truer.”
Autumn gave a slow clap. “Congratulations, Mr. Wright. That’s the right answer.”
Leonel shot her a fond look. “Same logic applies to Beckett’s situation. His losses were serious, but Beckett runs a tight ship and his people know it. When he gave an order, it got followed, and that’s what kept the damage from being worse.”
David murmured quietly, almost to himself. “So how many people does the shelter have left?”
“Somewhere around three million, maybe less,” Leonel said. “The missing person count is still being tallied.”
Autumn stretched her arms above her head with a lazy and unhurried air. “Three million now. How many make it to the end? That’s still anybody’s guess.”
She turned and walked away without another word.
David looked at Leonel. “So what do we do from here?”
Leonel a tired, lopsided smile. “Honestly, I’m not sure. We wait. At least our losses were minimal. Keep producing, keep living, and wait for whatever comes next.”
Autumn wandered over to the growing area at her own pace.
The space had been divided into two halves, one for vegetables and one for fruit.
They hadn’t planted any grain because Leonel’s stockpile was already more than sufficient to feed everyone, enough that they were starting to think seriously about livestock.
The end of the world was the only thing slowing that down.
Autumn’s storage space kept producing a constant, quiet abundance of grain on its own. That was the real safety net under everything

It was incredible.
She was still enjoying it when a low, murmured conversation drifted from somewhere behind her
After watching that flood come through. I’m just grateful we got on Mr. Wright’s side carly. We’ve got food, clothes, and we’re not freezing or baking to death. Honestly, it’s not that different from how things were before all this.”
“Right’ Look at what happened to Westfield Town. I don’t even feel right holding grudges against them anymore after seeing that. But hey, Mr. Wright’s got people, resources, and real strength, so why does he defer to Autumn on everything? She travels with one person. How dangerous can she really be?”
“Keep your voice down, are you trying to get yourself killed? I heard Mr. Wright has feelings for her.”
“Seriously?”
