Chapter 148 Big Haul

And nobody had seen a thing.

She sent a silent, heartfelt thanks to every satellite that had already fallen out of the sky.

Leonel reached out to Beckett and mentioned, with carefully measured subtlety, that he happened to biv two frigates on hand and wondered if Beckett might be interested.

Beckett’s mind worked fast. He understood immediately that Leonel had someone extraordinary working for him, someone who’d walked away with two frigates right from under the central shelter’s nose.

Frigates. Not some beat-up little cargo ship. Full military frigates.

That took serious ability.

“Yes, absolutely yes!” Beckett’s enthusiasm came through like a man greeting a long-lost family member. “Not to brag, but if anyone in Karthmoor can actually operate frigates, it’s us. We came up through the ground forces, sure, but our people cross-train across every branch. Without satellite support the frigates can’t run the way they’re designed to, but we can adapt them. Mr. Wright, I don’t even know what to say to you. We’re brothers, plain and simple. Anything you ever need, you say the word.”

Beckett talked for a long time after that, cycling through variations of gratitude until he’d thoroughly exhausted the subject, then he wrapped everything up by sending over a substantial quantity of gold.

“We’re practical people. We don’t care about being fancy.” Beckett looked at Leonel and said, “This is fresh out of the smelter. Only five or six tons, not much, but consider it a gift for Asher to do whatever she likes with.”

Leonel accepted the gold without argument and followed up with, “We don’t have many mouths to feed. so we can only put so much fish to use. But my people got a little carried away out there, quietly hauled in more than we need while I wasn’t watching. Your side runs a much bigger operation. I was wondering if you’d want…”

“Yes!” Beckett grabbed Leonel’s hand and shook it with the energy of someone who’d just won a bet. “Brother, you are genuinely my favorite person alive right now.”

“Alright, keep it reasonable.” Leonel pulled his hand back and straightened himself out. “My preferences run in a very straight direction.”

“Mine too! Ha!” Beckett rubbed the back of his head, and somehow managed to make his whole face look completely goofy despite being genuinely handsome.

“I’ll have someone bring the fish over by ship,” Leonel said. “Actually, I heard your side has military medics on staff…”

“Absolutely, plenty of them. Is someone sick over there? I’ll send doctors right away.” Beckett was already moving as he spoke. “Medicine is tight, but our medical skill is solid.”
