Chapter 94 A Vault Beneath the Ice
“Chief Evander is probably crying right now,” Silas joked.
“He brought this on himself,” Zain added.
Evander moved even faster than Silas and Zain had expected.
He went straight to Leonel, carrying Logan’s severed head as he begged for forgiveness.
The moment Evander saw Leonel, he dropped to his knees, sobbing so hard his nose ran “Mr. Wright, this is all my fault. I failed to keep my people in line, and it led to a disaster! Punish me however you see fit. Kill me if you want-I won’t resist!”
Leonel smiled, but his expression gave nothing away as he said, “Chief Evander, what’s all this? This may be the apocalypse, but we don’t bow and scrape before kings around here! Why are you all just standing there? Chief Evander’s on his knees. Help him up!”
Leonel’s bodyguards waited until Evander was firmly on his knees before pretending to help him. “Come on, Chief. Up you go. There’s no need for this.”
Evander’s face twitched. Rising with their help, he put on a remorseful expression and said, “Mr. Wright, you’ve treated Westfield well, and the last thing I’d do is repay you with betrayal. Yesterday’s attack scared everyone badly. I questioned the whole town as soon as I got back. That’s when I learned Logan had joined forces with the Steel Claws out of jealousy and planned the attack without anyone else knowing. Here’s his signed confession, complete with a bloody thumbprint. Please read it.”
James placed the bloodstained confession in front of Leonel.
The crooked handwriting practically dripped with anger and resentment.
Leonel looked away and said casually. “Since you dealt with the culprit yourself, Chief Evander, I see no reason to keep pressing the issue. Our communities are tied together by marriage, after all. We should treat each other like family.”
Evander quickly agreed, “Exactly.”
Leonel said evenly, “Still, my men are angry about what happened. The attack ruined a perfectly good wedding, and they aren’t willing to shrug that off.”
Evander’s eyes narrowed as he tried to guess what Leonel wanted. “Then… what would make this right?” Leonel smiled. “Asher did most of the fighting yesterday… I might be willing to let this go, but Asher…”
“Asher trusts you, Mr. Wright. If you’re willing to speak to him for us, Westfield will do whatever it takes!” Evander replied at once.
That’s what I like to hear!” Leonel glanced at James, who immediately pulled out a paper map and set it on the table
What’s this Evander hesitated, unable to guess what Leonel had in mind.
Leanel lifted his coffee and blew at it gently. This marks Karthmoor’s gold reserve vault. The floods came so fast that the entire vault ended up underwater. We didn’t have the equipment to recover it then, so it has stayed at the bottom of the lake ever since. Now the lake is frozen solid, which gives us the perfect chance to bring it back up Asher isn’t interested in much, but gold always gets his attention I imagine Karthmoor’s gold reserves would put him in a forgiving mood, don’t you?”
Evander’s face ughtened. “Mr Wright, you’re asking too much of us. Even with the lake frozen, we have no way to open the vault”
Leonel chuckled. That’s where the Steel Claws come in. With their help, getting the vault open shouldn’t be a problem.”
Evander went still.
Now he saw the trap.
Leonel had never been easy to deal with His mild manner hid a ruthless mind.
He meant to use the Steel Claws to break into the vault, then betray them and take the gold
