“Mm-hmm.” Emily lowered her head shyly.
“Have you ever dated before?”
Emily shook her head. “No, never.”
The Whelan family had been too poor, with too many mouths to feed and a paralyzed father. The village matchmakers wouldn’t dare propose a match for their house; no one wanted to marry a daughter from that family. Even her older sister Claire didn’t have a boyfriend. Everyone avoided their bad conditions.
Learning she had never had a boyfriend, Max was immediately interested. A virgin? It was rare to find one these days.
He took Emily’s hand and led her into a nearby lounge.
“Mr. Holt, what are you doing?” Emily asked worriedly.
“Nothing. Didn’t you say you liked me? Let’s go into the room and get to know each other... deeply.”
Max pulled her into the room and immediately started undressing her.
“Mr. Holt...” Emily was afraid. It was her first time, after all.
“What? Didn’t you say you liked me? Acting so reserved... you’re just saying one thing and meaning another!”
Max made a move to leave.
Emily didn’t want to lose such a perfect fiancé, so she grabbed him. “Mr. Holt... don’t go...”
“Good! I won’t go!” Max smiled triumphantly.
“Mr. Holt... it hurts...”
“It’s fine. It’s always like that the first time. Bear with it.”
Emily: “...”

Theresa and Elena happened to be dining at the same restaurant.
Max walked out. He was holding his belt with both hands, buckling it back up.
“Elena?” Max was surprised to run into her right after stepping out.
Just then, Emily walked out from behind him. Seeing Max and Elena together, jealousy instantly flared up.
“Elena, what are you doing here?” she demanded, stomping her foot anxiously. “Oh! I know. You must know the Holt and Sterling families are meeting here to discuss the wedding, so you came to cause trouble!”
“Get this straight: I am the real heiress, you are the fake. Mr. Holt is my fiancé. I advise you to stop coveting him, or I won’t be polite!” Emily scolded self-righteously.
Elena laughed coldly. “Shut up. You’re the type who gets sold and still counts the money for the buyer. I’ve seen stupid people, but never anyone as moronic as you.”
“Who are you calling stupid...”
Seeing this, Max stepped forward and draped his arm around Emily’s shoulder. He looked at Elena smugly. “See that? Emily is the real heiress now. She and I are a pair. Originally, I thought I’d be marrying you, but it turns out you’re just a counterfeit!”
Elena gave a sarcastic smile. “Then congratulations to you both. A bitch and a cur—truly a match made in heaven.”
