The next day, the Sterling parents and their five sons prepared for the exchange.
Today was the day Elena and the true heiress would be returned to their rightful families.-
Elena remained silent. She had seen firsthand the cruelty her adoptive parents and brothers were capable of.
"Elena, don't blame us for being harsh. After all, we aren't your real parents. You should be with them," Melissa said, trying to comfort the silent girl.
"Right. Not your real daughter," Elena murmured to herself.
And because she wasn't their real daughter, they had plotted something as monstrous as dismemberment.
They were truly ruthless.
All this time, she had been living among a pack of wolves.
Now, her heart held nothing but hatred.
Her eldest brother, Harrison, noticed the small bag she was carrying. "Elena, nothing from the Sterling family belongs to you. You can't take a single thing!"
Elena tossed the bag to him. "Go ahead, check it."
Harrison opened it and looked inside. There were only a few changes of clothes, a couple of books, and an old-looking bronze mirror.
Nothing else.
Seeing that she hadn't taken anything of value, Thomas tried to smooth things over.
"Harrison, Elena has been your sister for many years. Why are you checking her things? Even if she did take something, she's earned it. We wouldn't mind."
But Harrison retorted sarcastically, "I wouldn't be so sure. Her real parents are dirt poor. I hear they raise pigs out in the countryside."
Elena said nothing.
Soon, Elena and the Sterlings were in a car, driving for two or three hours until they reached a rural area.
The Whelan family lived on the outskirts of the city, in a place developers hadn't yet touched.
It was a strange mix of countryside and city fringe.
Emily Whelan was the true heiress.
She kicked over a bucket of pig feed next to her.
The Sterlings all stepped out.
"My daughter! My dear daughter! You've suffered so much!" Melissa cried, rushing forward to embrace Emily.
The girl was the spitting image of her.
This had to be her real daughter. No wonder she'd always felt Elena didn't quite look like her.
When Emily saw her real parents arrive, her eyes lit up. The luxury car, the entourage—she was so excited she could cry.
"Dad! Mom! You're finally here to take me home! I've had enough of this place!" she sobbed.
Her brothers also came forward to meet their real sister.
"Emily, from now on, you're Emily Sterling. You're no longer a Whelan. You have nothing to do with this family anymore," Thomas said, his heart aching for her.
Emily nodded eagerly. She was finally leaving this dump!
Elena watched the loving family reunion with a bitter, ironic smile, her heart swelling with rage.
"Emily, my sweet girl, you've been through so much," Melissa cooed. "Don't you worry. From now on, we'll make it all up to you. You'll have anything you could ever want!"
