Night had fallen.
Elena returned to the Whelan family home.
Amanda pulled her aside and said, "Elena, this is your younger brother, Jon Whelan. He came home today for the weekend."
"Jon, come say hello to your sister!" Amanda called out to the teenage boy sitting in the chair.
The boy merely glanced at Elena, ignored her completely, and walked into his room.
He slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
Elena frowned. It seemed this brother wasn't going to be easy to get along with.
He was in his rebellious teenage phase; she understood that.
Seeing this, Amanda said awkwardly, "That child..."
"It's fine, Mom. I'll go see how Dad is doing," Elena reassured her.
They had never met before, so a lack of affection was only natural.
Amanda followed her into the bedroom.
Daniel was doing better than before. He could now walk without support, using rehabilitation equipment to move around on his own.
Just then, Amanda's phone rang.
She stepped aside to answer it, and when she returned, her expression was grave.
"Amanda, what's wrong?" Daniel asked with concern.
"It's... it's a call from the main estate. They want to see Elena."
Elena paused. Main estate?
Didn't the Whelan family just own this small house? What main estate?
"Elena, I should explain the situation with the main family so you know what to expect."
It turned out that the Whelan family was actually quite prominent in Cresden City business circles, owning the Whelan Group.
While not a top-tier dynasty, they were still a wealthy corporate family.
Daniel was from the eldest branch, and he had two younger brothers.
However, because he had fallen out of favor, the entire family had ostracized him. More than a decade ago, the eldest branch had been kicked out.
Ideally, with such family wealth, the eldest son shouldn't have been suffering in poverty. It was hard to fathom the family's mindset.
The butler opened the door. Seeing them, he showed no sign of respect.
He looked at them with disdain, as if poor relatives from the countryside had come begging.
"Hurry up and come in. The Madam has been waiting a long time!"
"Let's go," Amanda said, holding Elena's hand as they walked in.
Elena carried a basket on her back filled with vegetables.
She had advised Amanda against bringing them, noting that these people likely wouldn't appreciate it, but Amanda had insisted.
She felt it was rude to arrive empty-handed.
When they reached the main hall, the room was crowded with Whelan family members.
The interior was decorated in magnificent splendor. The old matriarch sat with a head of jet-black hair, looking hale and hearty.
The black hair was likely dyed, covering the white roots that grew in.
