"What do you mean?"
Amanda, feeling inferior, lowered her head and said, "Elena, you sit and eat. I'll just stand."
It turned out that Amanda had always been discriminated against in the Whelan family.
Even though she married Daniel, she never received the family's acknowledgment.
Every mealtime, there was no seat for her; she was made to stand aside and eat with the servants.
"Your mother's status is lowly; she isn't qualified. We're allowing you to sit only because you have Whelan blood. What are you being picky about?" Lauren said sarcastically.
*Bang!*
Elena slammed her cutlery onto the table heavily.
The loud noise startled everyone.
The table shook, and some soup spilled out.
"I had no idea this society still practiced such vile segregation. If that's the case, I won't eat either. Mom, let's go!"
A bunch of snobs!
"Oh my, Mother, look at Elena's attitude! She scared me to death!" Lauren immediately complained to the matriarch.
"Halt!" the matriarch commanded.
Elena turned back, her gaze cold as she stared at the old woman. "Is there something else?"
"For someone raised by a prominent family like the Sterlings, you have no breeding. You understand no rules. With so many elders present, what is this attitude? Is this how the Sterlings raised you?"
Elena retorted angrily, "How the Sterlings raised me is none of your business. I haven't eaten a bite of Whelan food, nor have you raised me for a single day. Who are you to lecture me?"
"You... you..." The matriarch was furious.
Among her descendants, every single one was incredibly respectful to her.
She was the empress of this house; her word was law.
"How dare you! You girl, do you still think you're the Sterling family's heiress? What are you being so high and mighty for? This is the Whelan house, and we won't tolerate your insolence! As elders, we must discipline you!" Edward couldn't watch anymore and began to berate Elena.
Elena's eyes were cold as blades as she looked straight at him. "Hah! Discipline? Are you qualified?"
For some reason, meeting Elena's gaze gave Edward a shiver of fear.
"Amanda, are you going to let your daughter revolt and defy her elders?" the matriarch roared.
She slammed her cane heavily on the floor.
Amanda was frightened and looked uneasily at Elena.
Elena held her hand tightly. "Mom, don't be afraid. I'm here."
Looking into Elena's eyes, Amanda felt as if she had taken a calming pill.
"I listen to my daughter!" she said directly to the matriarch.
"Good! Very good! You've all grown wings and dare to oppose me. Someone come here!" the matriarch ordered.
