"Mrs. Whelan, since there's nothing else, may I take Elena out for a while?" Dylan asked.
"Yes! Yes! Elena, go have fun with Mr. Sinclair. If there's any issue, tell Grandma, and I'll back you up!" The old woman looked fiercely protective.
Elena glanced at her, indifferent to whether the sentiment was genuine or fake.
This was the most polite the old woman had ever been to her.
Without saying a word, she left the Whelan estate with Dylan.
Seeing this, Claire prepared to leave as well.
"Claire... Claire..." Justin tried to chase after her.
But he was blocked by Daniel and Amanda.
"Justin, you should keep your distance from Claire. We don't want to upset your parents," Daniel said.
"That's right. Our Claire has no destiny with you. Let's leave it at that."
"Uncle Daniel... I... I truly love Claire."
"What use is love? If you can't give Claire a good life, she isn't marrying you!" Amanda rejected him flatly.
"Um, Amanda, since our Justin likes your Claire so much, we've thought it over, and we've decided to respect our son's wishes," Mrs. Carter came over, looking sheepish.
She wanted to apologize, but she couldn't bring herself to say the words.
Amanda and Daniel knew exactly what was happening. It was only because Dylan had shown up to support them.
Now, all their faces had changed.
They remembered clearly how this family had belittled them just moments ago.
"Mom, what do we do now? My engagement to Justin..." Cathy was getting anxious.
"Enough. Can't you see the wind has shifted for the Carters? They're desperate to cling to Daniel's family now. You don't have a chance. Who asked you not to have such a powerful brother-in-law?" Maggie glared at her daughter.
"Hmph! That powerful brother-in-law used to be my man!" Cathy felt she had missed out on too much.
First, she missed out on a man as good as Dylan.
Then she missed out on Justin.
Good things were always being snatched away by others.
"Auntie, please talk some sense into Daniel and Amanda. My wife and I have already agreed to let Justin and Claire be together. You should let them get engaged! We need to finalize this," Robert Carter pleaded, turning to the old woman for help.
The old woman looked at him. "You really are fickle. I asked you before to think clearly about whether you wanted Cathy or Claire. You insisted on Cathy. Now, you're making me look like a fool too!"
