“If you don’t want to go, forget it. I can take your place.”
“You can play?” Elena raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, I studied with a pianist for a while when I was young. I’m not top-tier, but compared to Jane, I’m not bad. I won’t embarrass you.”
Elena curled her lips and smiled faintly.
“Elena! Give us a song! We heard you’re getting engaged to Dylan. Let us see!” The crowd, always eager for drama, started jeering.
Cathy looked at Elena smugly. “Elena, are you going to play or not? Or are you afraid you’re not as good as Jane, so you don’t dare?”
Reverse psychology?
“It looks like they are determined to make me stand up,” Elena said to Dylan.
If she played well, she would step on Jane, and Jane would resent her.
If she played poorly, she would humiliate herself.
People would think she, the fiancée, wasn’t worthy of Dylan or a powerful family like the Sinclairs.
She would become a joke.
And Cathy would spread the news everywhere, making a big deal out of it.
This method of killing two birds with one stone must have been Isabella’s idea. Cathy didn’t have the brains for it.
“I’m here. As long as you don’t want to, you don’t have to go. Let’s see who dares to say anything,” Dylan said softly.
Elena didn’t speak. Everyone was waiting for her to respond.
She remained silent.
This silence made Cathy even more smug.
“Elena, why aren’t you talking? If you don’t want to perform, just say so!”
“Why do I have to tell you? I perform if you tell me to?”
“It’s Grandma’s birthday. What’s wrong with performing?”
“Are you forcing me? By what right?” Elena said disdainfully.
If she ruined Grandma’s mood today, Grandma would give Amanda a hard time again.
Under everyone’s gaze, she walked directly onto the stage.
Although she was wearing a simple shirt and jeans today, she walked as if she carried the wind.
She wasn’t afraid or timid at all.
The people below watched silently.
Elena sat at the piano and began to play immediately.
Her fingers danced across the keys, looking very skilled.
She played “Vanessa’s Smile.” It was a happier piece, with a relaxed tune that felt like a spring breeze.
The melody was beautiful and built up in layers, quickly drawing people into the music.
Elena was fully immersed, seemingly having a dedicated passion for music.
Below, Dylan watched the girl on stage with a gentle gaze.
