Elena glanced at the barred window. Night had fully fallen.
It was time.
She had to move fast and find Theresa. She absolutely could not let her end up broken like Emily.
Without warning, Elena hurled her binder of scam scripts violently to the floor.
"Let me out! Let me out of here! I want to go home! I want to go home!"
Her sudden screaming instantly drew everyone's attention.
Nobody dared to shout in this room. Doing so was basically begging for a death sentence.
Laying half-conscious nearby, Emily flinched in shock.
She hadn't actually expected Elena to go through with it. A flicker of genuine respect pierced through her bitterness.
She had assumed Elena would chicken out like the rest of them.
"What are you doing? Shut up! Do you have a death wish?"
A guard stormed into the room, baton raised.
"I want to go home! I'm not scamming innocent people! Let me out!"
Smack!
The heavy baton crashed into Elena's shoulder.
She felt the sting, but it was entirely manageable.
To a normal person, a strike like that would break bones. To Elena, it was barely a warm-up.
She allowed herself to fall to the floor, keeping up her defiant act.
"I'm going home! You're nothing but a bunch of pathetic scam artists! Someday, someone is going to burn this whole place to the ground! Let me out!"
The guard beat her relentlessly, but she just kept screaming. Frustrated, he finally locked her up and radioed his boss.
"Manager Woods, we've got a live one demanding to go home!"
Manager Woods stepped into the room, scowling. Why was he dealing with so many stubborn brats today?
"Drag her to the Punishment Hall first. Teach her a lesson."
Elena was hauled out of the room.
Her little theatrical performance had paid off. She was getting a direct ticket to her.
"Take her to the Water Prison. Throw her in with today's other tough girl. Let's see who cracks first."
The guards chuckled sadistically.
"You got it, Boss. This is gonna be fun."
Elena was dragged down the dim corridors and shoved into the Water Prison.
The stench of decay hit her instantly. It was a suffocating, rotting odor. This was no place for the living.
"Get in!"
They shoved Elena into a wooden cage, the freezing, putrid water rising to her collarbones.
The guards locked the mechanism and left, slamming the heavy iron door behind them.
The room was engulfed in darkness. The only light seeped through a small ventilation shaft high up on the damp, concrete wall.
The faint moonlight caught the rippling black water, just enough to outline the horrors of the room.
Occasionally, a hollow, mournful wail would echo from one of the submerged figures.
