Theresa swatted Charles's finger away with a sharp slap. "Keep your paws to yourself!"
"I never said I wouldn't pay. I told her to show me the purchase record, and she refuses. So why exactly should I apologize?"
"The arrogance! You are way out of line! Lorna, if she's going to be like this, you can't let her off the hook. Sue her! Take her straight to court! Drain every last penny she has!" Charles snapped, turning back to Lorna.
Lorna subtly clenched her fingers into tight fists.
There was no way she could sue anyone!
Going to court meant providing hard evidence.
Without a purchase record, she would be laughed out of the courtroom.
She had already stated she didn't want compensation, so why couldn't Charles just let it go?
He was being so incredibly annoying!
For the first time, she felt a flicker of genuine irritation toward him.
"No, it's fine. If she won't apologize, then forget it. I'll just consider it a streak of bad luck. I don't want to stoop to the level of someone from the bottom of the barrel. It's beneath me. Besides, we work together, and I don't want to make things entirely unbearable. Let's just consider the matter settled. Everyone, get back to work!" Lorna declared to the crowd.
"Wow, Lorna really is the bigger person here. If she's not pursuing it, we shouldn't get involved. Charles, just let it rest. Lorna is just too kindhearted."
"Seriously. Unlike some people who can't afford things and refuse to pay for what they break. So shameless."
"I'm honestly in awe of Lorna. She's so sweet. I can't believe she's letting go of such a gorgeous dress."
Listening to the chorus of praise, Lorna managed a small, graceful smile. While she was devastated about the dress, at least this incident had cemented her flawless reputation in the office.
"Pathetic," Theresa scoffed coldly.
She turned on her heel and walked out of the office.
Once she was in the hallway, she pulled out her phone and dialed Diane Ellington's number.
"That's impossible. Something was definitely stolen. Can you go check my old room right now? Look in my closet and see if any of my clothes are missing."
Diane suddenly gasped in realization. "Oh, you mean your old clothes! Speaking of that, I completely forgot to tell you. After you moved out into your own place, I took a bunch of your old, unwanted clothes from your closet and gave them away!"
"What! You gave them away?" Theresa was stunned.
"Yes. You know Butler Avery's daughter moved to Cresden City for work, right? Butler Avery has worked for our family for over twenty years. He was taking care of us before you were even born. When his daughter came to the city, I looked at all those old clothes in your closet—the ones you clearly didn't want anymore and were just gathering dust—and I picked out a few pieces to give to her. I figured they shouldn't go to waste."
Theresa was speechless.
So that was it!
Lorna was Butler Avery's daughter!
The same Butler Avery who drove her father and managed the old estate!
No wonder Lorna had looked so vaguely familiar.
