Reborn Fake Heiress Watch the Whole Family Burn novel Chapter 820

But no one would ever know the extent of their sacrifices. Their work was strictly off the books, shrouded in shadows, with death waiting for them at every corner.

To keep their families safe, they had to erase their own existence entirely.

For the greater good, Zachary had walked away from his own family.

He might have seemed like a terrible son who abandoned his responsibilities, but Elena knew the truth. Zachary was an absolute hero.

“Logan, do you think we’ll ever go back to that life?” Elena asked quietly.

“Maybe.” Logan wasn't sure himself.

When Sirius betrayed them and Zachary died, their covers in Falveria were completely blown.

Because of that, command had ordered them to step down and blend back into civilian life. They hadn't received a single mission since.

They were, for all intents and purposes, officially retired.

“Boss, you’re drunk,” Logan noted, studying Elena’s flushed face.

Her cheeks were flushed, and she was lying flat on her back in the grass.

They had both taken the serum she developed, which gave them an insane tolerance for alcohol.

But when the mind was overwhelmed by grief, even they could be pushed to the edge.

Drowning in dark memories and desperate to numb the pain, Elena had deliberately let the alcohol hit her.

“Come on, Boss. Let’s get you home.”

Logan hoisted Elena onto his back. He had barely taken a few steps when Dylan materialized out of the shadows.

“I’ll take it from here,” Dylan said, his voice completely unreadable.

Logan didn't argue. He carefully passed Elena over to him.

Dylan scooped her into his arms and carried her away into the night.

He brought her straight back to their apartment.

After gently cleaning her up, he tucked her into bed and pulled the covers up to her chin.

Instead of joining her, he walked out onto the balcony. Standing alone in the moonlight, he lit cigarette after cigarette, letting the stubs pile up on the floor.

It wasn't until 2 AM that Dylan finally went inside. He took a quick shower, then slid into bed beside Elena.

He pulled her close, pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, and finally let himself fall asleep.

Dylan reached out and affectionately pinched her cheek. “So that’s what it is. Is that what your nightmares are about too?”

Elena nodded.

Until she hunted Sirius down and ended him, the nightmares would never stop.

She despised traitors more than anything else in the world.

It tore her apart knowing Zachary had died for nothing.

He could have returned home, reunited with his family, just like she and Logan did.

If he had come back, Michelle and her mother never would have been tortured by those people.

His family had suffered so much.

“It’s okay, beautiful. It’s all in the past now,” Dylan soothed her.

“What about you? What’s going on?”

Dylan offered a casual smile. “Nothing at all. I’m perfectly fine.”

“Don’t lie to me. I saw the pile of cigarette butts on the balcony. You think I’m blind? I’ve told you a hundred times that smoking is bad for you, yet you chain-smoked half the night away. Something is definitely wrong. I just bared my soul to you; you can't keep secrets from me.”
