Charles stood there, utterly paralyzed.
Handpicked!
That word pierced his pride like a jagged blade.
The prize he had sacrificed everything to claim had already belonged to someone else all along.
Logan, a measly security guard, was actually the CEO's fiancé!
A lowly guard—what gave him the right?!
How was Charles any less of a man than him?
The harsh reality that a simple doorman was infinitely more successful than him was a bitter pill he simply couldn't swallow.
Word of Charles making a scene at the company gates somehow leaked out.
Before long, his former colleagues tracked him down and cornered him on the street.
"Charles, you finally showed your face! Where the hell have you been hiding? Why aren't you answering your phone?!"
"Give me my money back! I lent you thousands of dollars! Pay up!"
"I loaned him ten grand! Give it back!"
The angry mob formed a tight circle around him, shouting over each other for their cash.
The noise was deafening, nearly making Charles's ears bleed.
"I don't have any money! You all handed it over willingly because you thought I was going to be the Ellington family's son-in-law. Don't act like I didn't know exactly what you were plotting! Now that I'm down on my luck, you're all swarming me for debts? Well, I'm not giving you a damn thing! Not a single cent!" Charles roared back.
"The fact that you failed to join the Ellington family has nothing to do with us! That's a completely separate issue from the money you owe! Pay us back!"
"Exactly! You were acting so high and mighty, bragging that the entire Ellington Group belonged to you. Turns out you're just a piece of trash that got tossed out on the street!"
"I was an idiot to believe your lies! That ten grand was my entire nest egg, and you better return it!"
The crowd's fury escalated with every word until someone finally threw a punch.
They surrounded Charles, unleashing a brutal beatdown on him right there on the pavement.
Fortunately for him, a bystander called the police, and the cops arrived just in time to break up the mob, saving his life.
Seeing Charles's name on the screen, her heart skipped a beat, and she answered the call.
"Why are you calling me?" Lorna choked out.
"Lorna, I missed you. I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have treated you like that yesterday. I've been thinking about it a lot, and I realized I needed to call and apologize. I've thought it through. I love you for who you are, not for whatever status you have. So, I'm willing to give you another chance to get back together with me. You better not mess it up this time!"
A wave of overwhelming joy washed over her.
"Charles, do you really mean that?"
"Of course I do. Let's meet up and talk about it."
"Okay!" Lorna agreed, practically trembling with excitement.
It didn't take long for Lorna and Charles to reunite.
"Charles, what happened to your face?!" Lorna cried out, her heart aching at the sight of his bruised and battered features.
"Don't even ask. It was just some debt collectors. Lorna, I sacrificed everything for you before. I've thought it over, and we should just stay together! We can't let this slip away!"
"Are you telling the truth? Didn't you just say I wasn't good enough for you?" Lorna asked, a hint of hesitation in her voice.
