“She dared to tread into a realm the King vigilantly guarded, so it was only a matter of time before he discovered her intrusion.”

Dermot’s voice, thin and almost threadlike, slithered into Raul’s consciousness, sending an icy shiver racing down his spine. The words hung in the air, heavy with foreboding.

“I… understand,” Raul managed to reply, his heart pounding in his chest like a war drum. The weight of impending doom pressed upon him, and he felt an overwhelming urge to escape the palace’s oppressive atmosphere. Without a second thought, he fled the grand halls, his footsteps echoing in the silence behind him.

Just then, Warren reentered the chamber, his demeanor tense and serious.

“Your Majesty, the imperial edict has been issued, but…” He hesitated, his eyes darting nervously toward the King, as if gauging the appropriateness of his next words. “Your humble servant has something to say, though I am unsure if it is suitable.”

“Speak!” the King commanded, his gaze momentarily flicking up from the pile of memorials he was perusing, his interest piqued.

Warren took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts before continuing, “The very first time I laid eyes on the Lady of Glowsend, I was struck by how much she resembled… the late Empress Angelina Burke. At first glance, I dared to believe that the Empress had somehow returned to us.”

“What did you just say?” The King’s hand trembled at the revelation, causing the memorial he held to slip and tumble onto the inkstone, where it quickly soaked through with dark ink, mirroring the tumult of emotions swirling within him.

The mention of the late Empress stirred memories long buried, memories that were both cherished and painful, clawing at the edges of his mind. After a moment of silence, he found his voice again. “Does she truly bear such a resemblance?”

Warren nodded earnestly, “Indeed, she does. The Chancellor’s wife passed away at a young age, and her origins remain a mystery. It is possible she shares a connection with the late Empress through familial ties.”

The King’s expression shifted, a mixture of intrigue and concern crossing his features. After a brief moment of contemplation, he uttered a single, resolute command, “Investigate!”

From behind the ornate screen, a figure slipped away, disappearing into the shadows.

The King’s focus wavered, the memorials forgotten as he stood, his thoughts racing. “Is she residing at the Chancellor’s estate?”

Warren shook his head, his face grave. “No, she has taken refuge in a modest inn on the outskirts of the city, having distanced herself from the Wallen family.”

“And on my way here, I learned that Raul conducted a blood test for kinship just a few days ago, discovering that she is not the biological daughter of the Wallen family. She was born to a midwife and has merely occupied Tessa’s place in the family all these years…”

“So she is not a young lady of the Chancellor’s estate?” The King’s brow furrowed deeply, confusion knitting his features as he turned to Warren. “What is truly happening?”

Warren shook his head slowly, uncertainty clouding his expression. “I cannot say for certain. All I know is that to keep this secret hidden, Raul resorted to murder, silencing the midwife and also killing Trent Brando…”

“Trent died just before the Chancellor entered the palace. He did indeed visit the Chancellor’s estate earlier tonight…” The King’s voice trailed off, his mind racing with implications.

“So,” Warren continued, his gaze steady on the King, “I cannot ascertain whether Lady Wrenna is the mother of the Lady of Glowsend, or if it was the deceased midwife, or perhaps… someone entirely different.”

A heavy silence enveloped the room as the King absorbed this revelation.

After a moment’s pause, he commanded, “Go and investigate. If you uncover her relatives, report back to me immediately.”

“I also need to step out for a while,” he added, his tone resolute.

With that, he turned on his heel and strode toward the side hall, his mind racing with the possibilities that lay ahead.

Dashnell had just exited the palace when he unexpectedly crossed paths with Wayne.

“Why are you here instead of by Margaery’s side?” Dashnell’s voice was laced with concern. “Has something befallen her?”

Wayne’s expression was a complex tapestry of emotions. “Things have taken a complicated turn. We should take our time to discuss this.”

As Dashnell boarded the carriage, Wayne finally spoke up, “Lady Margaery has left the Chancellor’s estate and is currently staying at an inn on the outskirts of the city.”

“Raul has declared that even in death, she remains a specter of the Chancellor’s estate, threatening to bar anyone from associating with her and trying to force her back.”

“But this isn’t the crux of the matter,” he added, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.

Wayne’s gaze turned serious as he continued, “The real issue is that the King has decreed that the wedding will take place on New Year’s Day. From that moment onward, she will be the Crown Princess.”

Dashnell felt his heart constrict painfully. Though Lady Margaery had devised a plan to sever ties with the Chancellor’s estate swiftly, he knew that once she became Crown Princess, she would have no further connection to him or their cause.

At that moment, Dashnell’s fingers clenched tightly, a storm of emotions brewing within him.

The King had hinted at this during their earlier conversation in the Imperial Study. He had sensed the King’s intentions, the way he had delayed their meeting was a calculated move.

However, hearing it laid out so plainly by Wayne made his heart race, as if a colossal hand was squeezing him, making it difficult to breathe.
