Chapter 483: The Root of Her Hesitation
Wemble settled into the chair opposite Alpha Henry, his voice low and measured. “You mentioned that you first saw her at her lowest point, and for quite some time, you didn’t like her. It was only after her personality grew stronger that you fell in love with her, right?”
Though technically accurate, the way it sounded felt oddly off.
Alpha Henry exhaled slowly. “In truth, I was biased against her before, but that was because of a misunderstanding.”
Wemble met his gaze and offered a knowing smile. “Let’s skip the backstory and focus on the outcome, shall we?”
“Alright.” Henry frowned slightly, a flicker of realization crossing his face. He began to understand why Aubrey might resist accepting his feelings.
Wemble leaned forward, his tone gentle but firm. “When you saw her at her lowest, you witnessed her worst moments. You didn’t like her when she was vulnerable. So deep down, she fears that what you love is just a partial, idealized version of herself. She worries that once you’re married and living together, she’ll relax, feeling secure, and you… will revert to the man you were before.”
“How could I do that?” Henry’s voice was quick to deny. “I didn’t fall for her because her personality grew stronger. Sure, her sudden change caught my attention, but that wasn’t why I love her.”
“Then what is the real reason?” Wemble tapped the table thoughtfully. “Is it because she’s beautiful? Because she stood by your side unwaveringly when everyone else turned against you? Because she faced danger with you instead of running away? Is it her loyalty and devotion that moved you to love her?”
Henry’s eyes sharpened with determination. “Don’t worry. For the rest of her life, I will be enough for her. You should get some rest. Sorry to have kept you.”
With that, Henry rose and left the room, his mind racing with thoughts of Aubrey. He was desperate to see her again, to tell her that her fears would never, ever come true.
When he opened the door, he found Aubrey sitting quietly, hugging her knees, her gaze fixed on the ceiling. Her face showed no sign of weakness, but in that moment, she looked achingly alone.
“You’re back?” Aubrey’s voice was soft as she turned to look at him.
