"Ah, Cecilia." On the other end of the video call, Yvonne Sterling saw Cecilia’s nervous expression and quickly explained with a cheerful laugh, "Oh, it’s nothing. Your uncle got scalded by boiling brine a few days ago. He got a big patch of blisters on his leg, so he’s still in the hospital. He just had his dressing changed."
"Scalded by brine? How could he be so careless!" Cecilia was still alarmed. Burns are the most painful, and changing the dressings is agonizing.
"Blame your uncle for being clumsy. He knocked it over by accident. The shop is so small. Good thing I wasn’t inside, or I would have gotten burned too." Yvonne Sterling sighed and added, "It scared me half to death at first. A whole layer of skin on his calf was burned off. Luckily, the doctor said it’s not serious and it’ll heal slowly once it scabs over. It’s no big deal for a grown man to have a scar. It’s just that he has to get the dressing changed twice a day."
Before Cecilia could ask more questions, Yvonne Sterling brought up the reason why Jasmine Sterling had been leaving home early recently. "Lately, your mom has been worried I can’t handle things by myself with your uncle in the hospital, so she’s been coming over early to help me out. When it’s not busy around noon, she watches the shop by herself while I come to the hospital to take care of your uncle."
Hearing this, Cecilia’s worries dissipated. So that was why her mother was leaving early.
But on second thought, Cecilia couldn’t help but nag, "Auntie, you and Uncle have to be more careful from now on. The shop is small and the workspace is so cramped. I still think you should listen to me. Just work until the end of the year and then stop. Next year, I’ll bring you to Lorcain and invest in a new business for you."
Yvonne Sterling just smiled at her words and replied casually, "Your aunt knows you’re a good girl, but our little business is doing just fine. We earn a decent amount each month. You don’t need to worry about us."
"But it’s such hard work. Waking up so early every day, and you have to be at the shop all the time. Ronald and Sarah are all grown up now. You and Uncle should take it easy."
"Who doesn’t have to work hard? Everything takes a bit of effort. Besides, your uncle and I are used to it. It doesn’t feel that hard to us. We’ve been making braised and roasted meats our whole lives. It’s second nature. If you made us do something else, we’d just be clumsy and awkward."
Yvonne Sterling meant what she said. Neither she nor her husband was highly educated. They had raised their two children solely on this one craft. If they were really to start another business, they knew they wouldn’t be able to handle it.
But Cecilia didn’t give in, only taking a small step back. "We can discuss this again next year."
Yvonne Sterling smiled. Regardless, her niece’s attitude warmed her heart.
"Oh, right, Cecilia, don’t tell Lily and Ethan about your uncle’s injury. Lily is on a film set, so she’d just worry for nothing if she knew. And Ethan needs to focus on his studies right now. Don’t let him get distracted," Yvonne Sterling added, making sure to remind Cecilia.
Cecilia nodded in understanding. After hanging up, she transferred some money to her aunt, not daring to send too much for fear that she wouldn’t accept it.
[Auntie, I can’t help much from here in Lorcain. Buy Uncle something nice to eat. Burns are miserable, so cheer him up.]
Yvonne Sterling replied: [He’s a grown man. A little suffering is no big deal. What’s there to cheer up about?]
Despite her words, Yvonne Sterling still accepted the transfer. It would be too distant of her not to. She knew it was a token of Cecilia’s affection.
[Your uncle says to thank his niece.]
Cecilia looked at the message, smiled, and shook her head.
Just then, Estelle Goodman pushed the door open from outside. "Honey, Yannick’s downstairs looking for you. You guys don’t have each other on WhatsApp?"
Cecilia shook her head. "I never took the initiative to add him."
She didn’t take the initiative, and neither did Yannick.
Estelle was a little shocked, but then she thought about it. It seemed like anything could happen when it came to Cecilia, and it would still feel normal.
’She’s just a very special person, different from everyone else.’
Cecilia went downstairs in her slippers and saw Yannick standing under the shade of a tree across the way. She smiled slightly and walked over to him.
