"Action!"
As the director’s voice faded, "Flora" was pushed into the pond by a malicious figure.
SPLASH! Lily Sterling fell into the pond and immediately started struggling and crying for help.
Camera Two swiveled to follow. "Jade," holding a brocade box, came running at the sound. Her face registered shock upon seeing the Second Miss in the water, and the box slipped from her grasp, tumbling to the ground.
"Cut!"
Assistant Director Lawson yelled, and Lily Sterling poked her head out of the water, a confused look on her face.
The assistant director glared at Suzanne Sawyer and shouted, "Do you even know how to act? You’re supposed to react with your hands at the same time you show shock! What is this nonsense where you look shocked and *then* the box falls? Does that make any sense?"
Suzanne Sawyer nodded repeatedly in apology. "I’m sorry, Director. I’ll do it again."
Assistant Director Lawson pursed his lips impatiently. His expression immediately softened when he looked at Lily Sterling, who was still soaking in the pond. "Lily, let’s take it again," he said gently. "From when you fall in and cry for help."
Lily Sterling gave him an "okay" sign.
But on the second take, Suzanne "accidentally" twisted her ankle right as she appeared, stumbling and nearly falling.
"Cut!"
On the third take, the camera panned to Suzanne, but she was two seconds late for her entrance.
"Cut!"
On the fourth take, she got tongue-tied halfway through her line.
"Cut!"
"What is wrong with you? Are you determined not to get this scene done?" Assistant Director Lawson flew into a rage. He strode over to Suzanne Sawyer, glared at her, and roared, "Is it that hard? Everyone is out here under the hot sun waiting for you to get this one take! Lily Sterling has been soaking in that water for over half an hour! Can you act or not? If you can’t, we’ll get a replacement!"
Suzanne Sawyer put on a terrified expression and said quickly, "I’m sorry, Director Lawson. I think I might have a bit of heatstroke. I’m feeling dizzy and really out of it. I’m not trying to waste everyone’s time on purpose."
Assistant Director Lawson was about to lay into her again when a staff member suddenly ran up and whispered something in his ear. His mouth hung half-open as he looked toward a middle-aged man in the corner of the set. Finally, with a helpless look, he swallowed the rest of his words.
"We’ll shoot this scene later! Someone get Lily Sterling out of there! Everyone, take a break and get some lunch!"
Lily Sterling was practically hauled out of the water. Performing a struggling, drowning scene for nearly half an hour would exhaust anyone, even a good swimmer.
Thankfully, it was summer, so the pond water wasn’t too cold. Otherwise, it would have been truly miserable.
As soon as she was on shore, Yuna draped a towel over her shoulders, her expression full of concern. "Lily, are you okay? How are you feeling?"
Lily Sterling nodded, her face a little pale. It was hard to tell if it was from the chill or from being submerged for so long, but either way, her complexion was unnaturally white.
She looked up at Suzanne Sawyer, only to meet the other woman’s unabashedly provocative and triumphant gaze.
’I might not be one to pick fights, but I’m no fool,’ she thought. ’How could I not see that Suzanne was doing this on purpose?’
"Let’s go back and get you into some dry clothes. I’ll blow-dry your hair for you," Yuna said.
Lily Sterling tore her gaze away and nodded, letting Yuna help her back to the dressing room.
Watching Lily Sterling’s miserable state, Suzanne Sawyer finally felt like she had vented half of her frustrations. But when she turned around, she saw her father’s face was as black as thunder.
"Dad..."
Suzanne went over to him, but before she could speak, her father said angrily, "Is this how they treat you on set all the time? Ordering you around like that?"
