"Wh-What?"
Mrs. Lane froze, an instinctive resistance rising within her. "I’m not going!"
Walter Lane glared at her. "If you don’t go, should I? Didn’t you just say you’d do anything for our son?"
Not giving her a chance to argue, Walter Lane picked up his napkin, wiped his mouth, and stood up. "It’s settled. If you can’t even handle a simple thing like this, I think it would be less trouble to just send Shawn abroad."
Seeing her husband’s serious expression, which showed he wasn’t joking at all, Mrs. Lane panicked. "Fine, I’ll go! Is that what you want?"
Walter Lane snorted and turned to head upstairs, leaving Mrs. Lane alone at the dining table, pressing a hand to her forehead. Her head was pounding. Mentally and physically exhausted, she had no appetite.
With her son in such a terrible state, she hadn’t had a single peaceful night’s sleep in days.
A moment later, the sound of footsteps coming downstairs echoed. Mrs. Lane thought it was Walter Lane, but when she looked up, she saw it was her son.
Shawn Lane was fully dressed and had even showered. Although he still looked pale, he didn’t appear nearly as disheveled as before.
Mrs. Lane quickly got up and went to him. "Shawn, where are you going?"
Shawn Lane ignored his mother, finished changing his shoes, and grabbed the keys to his sports car from the hook by the door before walking out.
Mrs. Lane didn’t try to stop him. She just watched his retreating back and called out repeatedly, "Drive slow! Be safe!"
She was happy that her son, who hadn’t left the house in days, was finally willing to go out. It didn’t matter where he was going; it was good for him to get out, clear his head, and find a distraction.
It was much better than him constantly cooped up in his room.
Most importantly, she had secretly installed a GPS tracker in his sports car, so she could see its real-time location on her phone. She wasn’t too worried about him getting into any trouble.
Shawn Lane drove to a lounge bar at an exclusive club downtown. It was still early, so there were no other customers. He walked straight to the bar, took a seat, and said, "Give me two of the house special, double strength."
"Right away, sir. Just a moment."
Shawn sat on the high stool, his eyes fixed on a painting on the wall. There was nothing special about it, but he stared at it intently, trying to focus his attention on one single point.
He was in so much pain. For days, fragmented thoughts had been churning in his mind, leaving him restless and unable to think straight. No matter what he tried to think about, his mind would eventually be filled with Cecilia Sterling’s face.
’I’m going crazy.’ He needed to numb himself with alcohol, even if only for a little while.
He wanted to empty his mind. He wanted to get drunk!
"Sir, your two double-strength specials. Please enjoy."
The bartender pushed the two glasses toward Shawn Lane. Shawn picked one up and, GULP GULP GULP, downed it in one go.
The extra-strong alcohol burned its way down his throat and into his system, bringing a fleeting sense of relief to his body and mind.
He raised the second glass and drank it dry in the same fashion.
The bartender looked at Shawn Lane in surprise. He’d seen plenty of customers drink to drown their sorrows, but this kind of drinking usually meant a broken heart.
He sighed silently just as he heard Shawn say, "Two tequilas."
’Mixing drinks... The fastest way to get wasted.’
And so he continued, downing one glass after another, mixing different types of alcohol. Before long, his vision started to double, but a sliver of his consciousness remained. Instead of making him completely drunk, the alcohol only served to infinitely magnify the emotions in his heart.
Without warning, he began to cry. Tears and snot streamed down his face as he softly mumbled Cecilia Sterling’s name.
He felt even worse, so miserable he could barely breathe.
The bartender couldn’t bear to watch any longer. He mixed some apple cider vinegar—a hangover remedy—with warm water and pushed it in front of Shawn. He watched as Shawn, mistaking it for another drink, chugged it down without a second thought.
He was still drunk.
