Ella realized that nobody mentioned Adrian’s elder brother in the King Family. Even the servants here were well-trained so they would never misspeak randomly.
But when she realized that, it was too late. The man had released the reins despite her refusal.
And when the gentle horse had stomped forward violently, Ella knew that what had to go wrong had already gone wrong in that moment.
And all of it connected back to Lilith who brought the horse, lured Adrian away with the idea of the race and of course, bribed the servant.
Ella sneered. What was worse was that the servant confessed his one-sided truth while she was about to lose her life in the woods.
It wasn’t far-fetched. In her previous life, almost all the servants stirred trouble for her because of Lilith. They worshipped the ground Lilith walked on.
In this life, people might have seen her in a better life.
But if she were to be compared to Lilith, then nobody, including Adrian’s grandparents, would pick her over Lilith.
All the effort she has put, all the care she has shown for still won’t be enough in these people’s eyes.
To them, she would never be worthy enough to stand beside Adrian.
A bitterness spread inside Ella’s heart gradually. She stood there, unresponsive to their words and doubts.
What can you change after all?
No matter how hard you try, in the end, that would amount to nothing.
So, why even bother trying?
Why bother trying to change their hearts?
Why bother trying to win them over?
Why bother with anything at all?
There was an undeniable coldness that claimed Ella’s heart and for a moment, her expressive and bright eyes had a trace of indifference and frost.
Right at this moment, a broad back covered Ella’s view.
A cold and huge palm enveloped over her own, covering it in warmth.
The trance broke and Ella’s eyes returned to normal. She glanced at Adrian’s back in a reverie.
’Thump’
’Thump’
’Thump’
Love... What was it to her?
Him.
Him. Him. Him.
Ella closed her eyes and inhaled a deep breath.
When she opened her eyes again, they were bright and sparkly, just like usual.
"What do you mean by that, Adrian?" Old Master King rose to his feet, "You are shielding her as if your grandmother is bullying her. Do you have no regard for your elders?"
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. His mouth moved but before he could utter a word, he felt a pinch on his palm.
It was barely felt, like the gentle scratch of a kitten.
When he tilted his head to the side, the girl freed her hand from his grasp and stepped forward to stand in front of his grandparents.
"Grandpa... Grandma... Actually, Adrian and I did not tell you something just now..."
The old couple exchanged a brief glance.
Lilith’s eyes narrowed, "Miss Yu, are you going to deny what happened? Are you saying that the Old Madam and Old Master have judged the situation wrongly?"
A strange silence settled over the living room. Everyone knew how complicated the situation had become just with that one statement.
If Ella said anything other than what the old couple believed in, and if her words turned out to be the truth then the old couple would be humiliated for judging the situation wrongly.
If she did not do it, then she would be admitting that the entire thing was her fault.
But with that, what would she say now?
Lilith smiled as she looked at Ella, not losing the slightest of her poise.
Ella on the other hand trembled and clutched onto Adrian’s wrist.
Adrian’s face darkened immediately and he stepped forward to support her.
The old couple saw the situation and stepped forward.
"Ella, what’s wrong with you?" Old Madam King walked over.
Ella meekly escaped Adrian’s clutches and leaned over on Old Madam King.
Adrian looked at his empty hands and then at Ella, his brows tugging together in confusion.
