Chapter Sixty Two

Unlocking the door with her keys, she moved quietly; she didn’t want to ring the bell, unsure if Renzo was still sleeping. She pushed the door open and clicked it shut behind her, holding her breath as she stepped into the entryway. The sound of vibrant Jaughter hit her. Renzo and Lucy were huddled together on the bed, completely engrossed in the television.
Her heart flooded with relief; she had spent the entire morning fraught with anxiety, fearing Renzo would be inconsolable after her night away. That fear was exactly why she had tried to rush home the moment she woke, only for her evil ex–husband to stall her. But seeing them so content, Rosa realized with a pang of gratitude that Lucy and Renzo had forged a bond that was both deep and unshakable.
Lucy was already geared up to leave, merely waiting for Rosa’s return as Rosa had sent a quick text while en route, but the second Lucy laid eyes on her, she sensed the vibration of tension radiating off Rosa–a look of haunted exhaustion that made her linger a few minutes longer before heading to her shift.
“Mommy, I missed you!” Renzo squealed, charging into Rosa’s arms. She scooped him up, a tired giggle escaping her as she showered his cheeks with kisses.
“My sweet boy. I missed you too.”
“Then why didn’t you come home last night?” he pouted, his voice full of childish accusation.
Rosa forced a smile, brushing the hair back from his forehead. “I had to work late, baby. But look–I brought you treats.” She pulled a bag from her arm, revealing the treasures she’d scavenged on her way home.
“Whoa, chocolate!” Renzo’s eyes ignited as he clutched the candy bar. Then, seeing the flat square box, he let out a joyful shriek. “Pizza!”
He scrambled down from his mother’s arms and hurried to the bed, where Lucy was already opening the lid to reveal the greasy, golden slices. While Renzo was distracted by his feast, Lucy stepped closer to Rosa, her expression shifting from relief to
concern.
“What’s wrong?” Lucy asked, her voice soft but probing.
“We’ll talk this evening. You need to head to your shift, or you’ll be late,” Rosa replied, offering a wan smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“When do you leave for your shift?” Lucy pressed, concerned that if Rosa had a morning shift too, Renzo would be left entirely
alone.
“I’ve moved my hours to the evening, so I’ll be starting once you get back home,” Rosa explained.
Lucy nodded, but she didn’t move toward the door. Instead, she took Rosa’s hand and led her toward the small, chipped stool tucked under the round table they used as a dining area. She gestured for Rosa to sit.
“Tell me what’s happening. I can afford to be a few minutes late,” Lucy insisted, her gaze fixed on her friend.
Rosa let out a long, weary sigh and finally unburdened herself. She recounted everything Nicholas had revealed–the betrayal, the lies, and the dark truth behind her family’s fall.
Lucy’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. She had known Rosa’s life was difficult, but she hadn’t realized her family tree was rooted in such malice.
“Now next, Rosa?” Lucy asked softly, her eyes searching her friend’s face. “What are you going to do now?”
Rosa stared back at her, the gears in her mind turning as she tried to sift through the chaos and calculate her next step.
Francesca and Laura returned to the villa, the air between them thick with agitation. They sank into the plush velvet armchairs, clutching wine glasses as if the stems might snap under the pressure of their grip.
