So Emperor Aldric really had started thinking about naming a Crown Prince.
If that was true, then his condition was probably getting worse. Otherwise, he would not have stopped putting it off.
Once Zephyr became Crown Prince, it would be much harder for Marcus to take the throne later.
Even on the question of legitimacy, he would have to spend far more effort cleaning everything up. If he handled it badly, the name of usurper would stick to him for good.
No wonder Marcus had wanted her to take care of that matter herself.
She was still turning it over when she failed to notice Zephyr reaching up to stroke her cheek.
All Fiona caught was a shadow falling over her.
She looked up and saw Xavier standing there with no expression on his face.
None at all.
Both times he had seen her standing too close to Zephyr, he had looked exactly like this.
It almost looked like he had caught her with a lover behind someone's back.
But in front of Soren, he had never shown that face.
"Mr. Luthor has returned to Jexburgh."
Zephyr said it with a smile, then took Fiona's hand and looked at Xavier with open provocation.
Xavier gave Fiona one calm look.
She pulled her hand back.
"Mr. Xavier," Fiona said.
"Once Ms. Fiona is done admiring the lakeside, you should head back to the estate."
Xavier left only that line behind, then turned his horse and rode off.
After Fiona returned to the estate, she heard that Xavier had handled the road in Dasshire just as cleanly.
Foreign forces had always been entrenched around Dasshire and had never wanted travel between Dasshire and Jexburgh to become convenient. Because of that, the road had never been finished, and Emperor Aldric had long been left without a solution.
No one had expected that the road that had remained unfinished ever since Emperor Aldric took the throne would actually be completed by Xavier.
That was far more than a simple merit.
"Xavier has never failed when entrusted with a task. He has won my heart time and again. He should be rewarded."
Emperor Aldric was openly delighted.
Xavier dropped to his knees.
"Your subject has one presumptuous request."
"Speak freely, Xavier."
"At present, Your subject has reached the age to marry. I ask His Majesty to grant a marriage between me and Fiona," Xavier said.
The look on Emperor Aldric's face shifted, just a little.
Emperor Aldric had actually bestowed a marriage between Mr. Xavier of the Luthor Estate and Fiona of the Niven family.
"That Mr. Xavier is a fine-looking man, and Fiona is lovely too. The two of them really do match."
"Just imagine how good-looking their children will be one day."
"You're bold, aren't you? You've already skipped ahead to the children," someone else said with a laugh.
All across Jexburgh, people talked about little else.
Fiona stayed inside the Niven family estate for several days without stepping out once.
Zephyr naturally sent for her more than once.
But now that her marriage had been settled, it would have been improper for Fiona to go see him again.
If people pinned a charge of playing both sides on her, the reputation of the Niven family's lady would sound ugly indeed.
Even she had not expected Emperor Aldric to suddenly bestow a marriage.
At least Marcus had already had her finish the matter he assigned her some time earlier.
Meryl was thoroughly satisfied with this match.
She had always worried about Zephyr before, but now she could finally set that aside.
And this future son-in-law happened to be the very one she had wanted all along, so there was nothing better.
