Soren looked at her once.
His expression stayed flat.
Quentin tried to stop her. "Ms. Chambers, has your health been any better these past few days?"
Ever since Hillary had rushed to Broadmoor, she'd fallen seriously ill. A young lady coming all the way there alone had obviously not had it easy, and through all of it, she'd stood by Soren's side without once shrinking back from the risk.
Quentin had always thought very highly of her.
Still, Hillary kept saying she saw Soren as an older brother.
Quentin had never quite believed that was all it was.
What Quentin had said was meant to steer her away from talking about Fiona.
Unfortunately, Hillary seemed not to notice at all. She kept smiling as she said, "Fiona has always liked Mr. Xavier. Now she finally got what she wanted. The two of them are a perfect match."
When one person got what they wanted, another was left with a regret that could last a lifetime.
There had never been room for a third person in this kind of thing.
Soren's brows drew together a little. "Fiona doesn't like Mr. Xavier that way."
She was somewhat closer to Xavier, and her attitude toward him was even better than it had been toward Soren.
But in Soren's eyes, that still wasn't love.
As for the engagement, it was probably only a temporary measure.
Xavier was on guard against Zephyr too.
Seeing him like that, Hillary's smile thinned a little. "Soren, did I say something wrong? Please don't be upset with me."
Soren looked at her for a moment and said nothing. After a long pause, he said, "I've always treated you like my own little sister, Hillary, so why would I be upset with you? Since you still haven't recovered, go back and rest."
Whether he meant to or not, there was something in those words that sounded like a warning.
Hillary only heard the part about being his "cousin."
The taste of it turned sharp in her chest. She had never wanted to be his cousin, but she knew just as clearly that there was nothing she could do to change what he had decided.
All she could do was hold on to one small hope—that one day, his mind might turn.
Even so, Soren still couldn't sleep that night.
He got up, his face blank, and wrote out a long letter in one sweep.
Marcus received that letter several days later.
Cierra was attending at his side, so of course she caught a glimpse of some of what was written.
She had meant to keep it in and pretend she'd seen nothing, but curiosity got the better of her in the end. She lowered her voice and asked, "Is Lord Soren planning to return to Jexburgh?"
The corner of Marcus's mouth tipped up. "If he doesn't go back soon, someone might steal his home out from under him."
Cierra said, "He's afraid that if he waits any longer, Fiona and Xavier's engagement will become real. But that actually works in your favor, so you'd be better off just going along with it."
