By the time news of a sweeping victory came back from Broadmoor, another month had already passed.
"I heard Lord Soren led the campaign himself. That's how they won."
It had been nearly a year since Fiona last heard Soren's name spoken among the noble ladies of Jexburgh.
She lifted her eyes toward the lady who had spoken.
It turned out she was the lady of Havenford Estate. No wonder she knew what was happening over in Broadmoor.
And once Soren's name came up, it naturally stirred the curiosity of quite a few other ladies.
"It's been almost a year without any news of Lord Soren, and your information is still the sharpest. Oh... isn't your sister in Broadmoor too?"
The question was directed at Hillary.
"It won't be much longer now. Lord Soren will be returning to Jexburgh soon, and Roxanne will be coming back with him."
Fiona lowered her eyes. Soren's return to Jexburgh meant Emperor Aldric had already lost a move in this game. That also meant the attempt on Soren's life had to be answered.
Emperor Aldric's plan was to start with Spencer, pin the crime on Cornelius, and use that to dispose of him. After that, he could rest easy and install Zephyr as Crown Prince. And once Cornelius was branded a traitor who had colluded with the Steppe Nomads, the charge of trying to assassinate Soren would naturally land on him too.
If that happened, Soren would have little room to keep pressing the matter.
But right now, someone did not want Zephyr to become Crown Prince.
And Soren would not want suspicion to fall on him, so anything involving Zephyr had to happen before he returned to Jexburgh.
At this rate, it wouldn't be long before Jexburgh started moving.
Fiona couldn't help carrying a little weight in her chest. She was tied up in this matter too.
Sure enough, just as she'd expected, a few days later someone started a full search of Zephyr's estate.
But as for what exactly had turned up, not a whisper leaked out.
The one in charge of the search was Roxanne's father. When it came to Zephyr's affairs, he was naturally very "thorough."
Or very eager.
When Xavier saw Fiona, he said, "You kept meeting Zephyr so often just to leave those clues about Spencer in his estate?"
Fiona didn't deny it. Xavier's expression gave nothing away.
"They probably didn't want anything to happen to Prince Zephyr either, so before the Chief Censor searched the prince's estate, they warned Prince Zephyr ahead of time," Fiona said. "What they needed was only proof that he and Spencer had been in secret contact."
Fiona spoke softly. "Sometimes when I think about him in my last life, he really was cruel. It's hard for me to imagine that he was actually my husband."
Something darker settled in Xavier's eyes.
What happened to Vincent had never been completely separate from the Zonfrillo Estate.
"Mr. Luthor, in the last life, were you close with my brother?"
"Mm. We crossed paths a few times," Xavier said.
Fiona didn't say anything after that.
Xavier had been part of Soren's staff. He and Vincent had stood on opposite sides. There was no way they could have been close.
Everything that had happened in that last life left her unable to trust Soren in this one.
So if she needed someone to lean on, it could never be him. And when she chose Marcus, she still hadn't known the man she saved was Soren.
If she had known sooner, then with the way Soren treated her now, maybe she could have shown him a little goodwill and asked him to help her.
"Ms. Fiona, the reason you've refused to get close to Lord Soren in this life... is it because of Mr. Vincent?" Xavier asked all at once.
