Between the entire Prince Cornelius' Estate never having any chance to rise again and keeping the child alive, Cornelius naturally knew which mattered more.
A smile rested at the corner of Cornelius's mouth. With his wife beside him, no matter what kind of situation he fell into, he had nothing to fear.
He had married the best woman in the world.
But he had never once planned to drag her into death with him. If a day ever came when he was doomed beyond saving, he would personally find her another good husband. A princess consort remarrying would be a humiliation to the royal family, but he had never cared about that.
He only wanted her safe.
Cornelius pulled his thoughts back. Beside him, though, Xavier had gone a little distant.
Cornelius and Roxanne had been like this in both lifetimes.
What he wanted in his own heart wasn't so different from this.
Cornelius looked over at Xavier. "Do you need me to call Fiona over for you?"
"Then I'll trouble Your Highness for that," Xavier said.
Now that the two of them were engaged, there was nothing wrong with letting them meet for a bit so long as Cornelius didn't make a show of it.
Besides, back at the Niven family, neither of them had ever cared much about those rules anyway.
Fiona wasn't surprised Xavier had shown up at Prince Cornelius' Estate.
Now he was the man she was engaged to, and that alone meant he could never get along with Zephyr, who had designs on her.
To Cornelius, that made Xavier someone worth drawing to his side.
Fiona looked at Xavier and asked, "Mr. Xavier, would you like to try some grapes?"
They had been sent over from the Imperial Palace as a reward for the imperial grandson, and the taste was excellent.
Xavier wasn't the kind of man who chased after snacks, but since she was the one offering them to him, he didn't refuse.
"How do they taste?"
"Sweet," Xavier said.
Sweet clear down to his chest.
In the last life, he had rarely been treated like this.
At that moment, Xavier suddenly understood why Callum had always liked going home and eating whatever his lady gave him.
If a wife fed it to him herself, it would be hard not to take it. Turning it down would only make a man look ungrateful.
Off to the side, Naomi sat there with that sour twist in her chest, and it wasn't even for herself. It was for Soren.
Did they think she couldn't tell? Mr. Xavier was doing this on purpose. He was baiting Fiona, plain and simple. He was enjoying the favor Fiona was giving him.
Fiona had originally been meant to become her sister-in-law.
Xavier flicked a glance at her out of the corner of his eye, then slowly swallowed the grape.
Only when Fiona was about to leave did she remember the pearl bracelet.
She took it out and handed it to Naomi.
Naomi looked startled, but she still accepted it.
Xavier saw the pearl bracelet too, and something shifted in his eyes.
If he'd managed to take a liking to her before she saved him too, then in that last life, he wouldn't have gone on living with suspicion wrapped around everything, unwilling to trust anyone.
And he wouldn't have let a good marriage slip past him.
Fiona saw that Xavier kept staring at the pearl bracelet the way someone looked at something familiar, so she didn't hide it from him.
"This belongs to Lord Soren. And right now, there's still a marriage arrangement between you and me, so it's better to return it to him."
Xavier said, "That bracelet has to be delivered to the person it's meant for within three days of changing hands."
Fiona said nothing.
A moment later, she said, "Mr. Xavier knows an awful lot about it. I guess that means in the last life, you saw him give this bracelet away with your own eyes. Who did he give it to then?"
Xavier went still for a beat.
"Was it Hillary?" Fiona lifted her eyes to him.
Xavier said, "Lord Soren didn't give it to her."
"Then Luna?"
"What existed between Lord Soren and Luna was nothing more than an exchange of interests." Xavier pressed his lips together.
"If there had really been something, how could you know every detail? If he wanted to sleep with someone in secret, he could easily keep it from a staff member like you." Fiona looked at him, measuring him.
He knew far too much about Soren.
Xavier caught it right away. Fiona had started to doubt him.
The way he kept bringing up things from that past life, even private things no outsider should have known, had never been entirely innocent. Somewhere in it, there had always been a selfish pull, a faint hope that she might recognize him.
