Reborn to Flee My Fiance's Obsession (Fiona and Soren) novel Chapter 323

Over by Fiona, Pearl was sighing over it too. "Ms. Fiona, the lady of Havenford Estate really looks like a whole different person now. Girls at that age really do grow up fast."

Fiona looked worn down.

It wasn't that she disliked Hillary. But now that she had seen her again, something in her kept pushing back, a kind of resistance she couldn't put into words.

"Let's go back," Fiona said.

Soren watched her leave.

His brow drew together, just barely.

As for what came next, Soren naturally had to go to the Imperial Palace first to see His Majesty.

Marcus was the one assigned to receive him today.

The two of them went together, but neither spoke.

Marcus had always carried himself like nothing in the world really mattered to him when he was out in public.

Now Soren was even colder than that.

The young eunuch leading them didn't dare say a single extra word. He only kept his back bent and walked ahead to show the way.

"Father's old illness has been acting up lately, so he couldn't come receive Lord Soren himself," Marcus said.

On the surface, it sounded like he was explaining things for Emperor Aldric. What he was really doing was telling Soren that the emperor's health had not been good for some time.

"His Majesty's health comes first," Soren said.

Inside the hall, it wasn't only Emperor Aldric.

Alexander was there too.

Soren dropped to his knees and saluted.

"His Majesty."

Emperor Aldric looked at him with a kindly warmth and said in an easy voice, "Soren, you've grown a lot steadier than you were a year ago. And now you've returned in triumph again. Looks to me like Duflana can't do without you."

That line carried more than it seemed to.

How could it really be Duflana that couldn't do without Soren? This was Emperor Aldric extending goodwill.

He might have lost a step to the Zonfrillo Estate in their struggle, but for the sake of the realm, cooperation was still something he had to talk about.

Still, Emperor Aldric did not have no regrets.

If he had not been seriously ill, if the court had not been full of rumors, if the key ministers had not been so unsettled that his grip over the forces in court had weakened, he might not have come out slightly behind the Zonfrillo Estate at all.

He had only lost because the timing had gone against him. If things had broken differently, Alexander's side would have come out of this with its strength badly drained.

But there was no point bringing any of that up now.

Soren said flatly, "As a subject, serving the country is nothing more than my duty."
